Guest editorial: Mathematics for teaching or mathematics for teachers?

open access: yes, 2006
In Singapore, one topic of great interest in mathematics teacher education is the subject knowledge (SK) in mathematics of teachers. This topic has arisen in other places, often under the name “mathematical knowledge for teaching”, or “MKT.” Many ...

Extending Battery Usage Time of a Heavy‐Duty Mecanum‐Wheeled Autonomous Electric Vehicle Used in Iron–Steel Industry by Considering Wheel Slippage

open access: yesAdvanced Intelligent Systems, Volume 7, Issue 3, March 2025.
It is a fact that slippage causes tracking errors in both longitudinal and lateral directions which results to have less travel distance in tracking a reference trajectory. Less travel distance means having energy loss of the battery and carrying loads less than planned.

Teaching mathematics : self-knowledge, pupil knowledge and content knowledge

open access: yes, 2012
Mathematical learning is significantly influenced by the quality of mathematics teaching (Hiebert and Grouws 2007). In spite of the evidence for teachers seeking to do what they believe to be in the best interests of their learners (Schuck 2009; Gholami ...

Large Language Model‐Based Chatbots in Higher Education

open access: yesAdvanced Intelligent Systems, Volume 7, Issue 3, March 2025.
The use of large language models (LLMs) in higher education can facilitate personalized learning experiences, advance asynchronized learning, and support instructors, students, and researchers across diverse fields. The development of regulations and guidelines that address ethical and legal issues is essential to ensure safe and responsible adaptation

Mathematics and Teaching

open access: yesNotices of the American Mathematical Society, 2015
Induction I was not born to be a mathematician. Like many, I was drawn to mathematics by great teaching. Not that I was encouraged or mentored by supportive and caring teachers—such was not the case. It was instead that I had as teachers some remarkable mathematicians who made the highest expression of mathematical thinking visible and available to be ...

“It Is Much Safer to Be Sparse than Connected”: Safe Control of Robotic Swarm Density Dynamics with PDE Optimization with State Constraints

open access: yesAdvanced Intelligent Systems, EarlyView.
This paper proposes a novel control framework to ensure safety of a robotic swarm. A feedback optimization controller is capable of driving the swarm toward a target density while keeping risk‐zone exposure below a safety threshold. Theory and experiments show how safety is more effectively achieved for sparsely connected swarms.
