The oocyte is dependent on granulosa cells to provide nutrients and regulatory signals. Granulosa cells must be at the appropriate stage of differentiation to initiate these signals and transmit them to the oocyte. Studies have shown that in vitro-matured oocytes from follicles in early stages of atresia are more competent to support embryonic ...

Räsänen draws a distinction between chronological age and biological age and argues that biological ageing is (sometimes) desirable. To demonstrate this, he asks us to consider the case of April, who like Karel Čapek’s Elina Makropulos, has stopped biologically ageing.

In the past, centrosome maturation has been described as the change in microtubule nucleation potential that occurs as cells pass through specific phases of the cell cycle. It is suggested that the idea of centrosome maturation be expanded to include gain of functions that are not necessarily related to microtubule nucleation.

The transition from fetal to newborn to adult previously has been associated with a progressive increase in myocardial contractile function. The purpose of this review is to summarize new information on the biochemical and molecular processes that regulate the perinatal maturation of heart function. The developing heart experiences a perinatal increase

Viral genomes are transported between cells using various structural solutions such as spherical or filamentous protein cages, alone or in combination with lipid envelopes, in assemblies of varying complexity. Morphogenesis of the new infectious particles (virions) encompasses capsid assembly from individual components (proteins, and membranes when ...

Enzymes possessing the capacity to oxidize molecular hydrogen have developed convergently three class of enzymes leading to: [FeFe]-, [NiFe]-, and [FeS]-cluster-free hydrogenases. They differ in the composition and the structure of the active site metal centre and the sequence of the constituent structural polypeptides but they show one unifying ...

The 1989 four-part series on the seasons of dentistry continues with fall. A mature practitioner writes that the children are educated and independent, the home and office are paid for, and he’s reached a “utopia,” but what now?
