Transfection Alters Ion Transport in MDCK Cells

Journal of Membrane Biology, 1996
In the course of an investigation into the effect of Tamm-Horsfall protein (THP) on ion transport, we performed stable transfection of THP into MDCK cells using the SV40 or the cytomegalovirus (CMV) promoter. As controls, we transfected MDCK cells with an "empty" plasmid containing SV40 or CMV promoter but without THP cDNA.

SNARE Protein Trafficking in Polarized MDCK Cells

Traffic, 2000
A key feature of polarized epithelial cells is the ability to maintain the specific biochemical composition of the apical and basolateral plasma membrane domains. This polarity is generated and maintained by the continuous sorting of apical and basolateral components in the secretory and endocytic pathways.

Snail modulates cell metabolism in MDCK cells

Biochemical and Biophysical Research Communications, 2013
Snail, a repressor of E-cadherin gene transcription, induces epithelial-to-mesenchymal transition and is involved in tumor progression. Snail also mediates resistance to cell death induced by serum depletion. By contrast, we observed that snail-expressing MDCK (MDCK/snail) cells undergo cell death at a higher rate than control (MDCK/neo) cells in low ...

Mineralocorticoid-induced membrane proteins in MDCK cells

Molecular and Cellular Endocrinology, 1982
The Madin-Darby canine kidney (MDCK) cell line, which exhibits properties indicative of a distal tubule origin, evidently binds and responds to mineralocorticoid hormones. We investigated the effects of aldosterone and deoxycorticosterone on protein synthesis in MDCK cells grown either in medium supplemented with serum or in a hormonally defined, serum-

Polarity of the Forssman glycolipid in MDCK epithelial cells

Biochimica et Biophysica Acta (BBA) - Molecular Cell Research, 1987
To determine whether epithelial plasma membrane glycolipids are polarized in a manner analogous to membrane proteins, MDCK cells grown on permeable filters were analyzed for the expression of Forssman ceramide pentasaccharide, the major neutral glycolipid in these cells.

Giant MDCK cells: a novel expression system.

Methods in enzymology, 1990
This chapter describes a technique by which an epithelial cell line can be used for expression experiments. Basically, cells are harvested from a subconfluent monolayer and fused to form giant cells. For expression experiments the giant cells have to be identified first, then injected individually, and, finally, 24 hr after microinjection, re ...
