The Apical Membrane Glycocalyx of MDCK Cells

The Journal of Membrane Biology, 2000
The microenvironment near the apical membrane of MDCK cells was studied by quantitation of the fluorescence of wheat germ agglutinin attached to fluorescein (WGA). WGA was shown to bind to sialic acid residues attached to galactose at the alpha-2,3 position in the glycocalyx on the apical membrane.

Apical membrane permeability of MDCK cells

American Journal of Physiology-Cell Physiology, 1996
The osmotic water permeability (Pf) and permeability to nonelectrolytes were determined for the apical membrane of clonal strain Madin-Darby canine kidney (MDCK) C12 cells cultured as cysts with the apical membrane facing the surrounding medium. Pf and solute permeabilities were calculated from the rate of volume change of cysts by digitizing images ...

Variability of functional characteristics of MDCK cells

American Journal of Physiology-Cell Physiology, 1986
We measured several functional parameters of MDCK cells cultured as monolayers in order to more fully characterize their ion transport properties. Most of the present studies were completed with five groups (A-E) of MDCK cells studied from passage 62 to 78.

Cytomatrix synthesis in MDCK epithelial cells

Journal of Cellular Physiology, 1990
AbstractDetailed information regarding the synthesis rates of individual protein components is important in understanding the assembly and dynamics of the cytoskeletal matrix of eukaryotic cells. As an approach to this topic, the dual isotope technique of Clark and Zak J. Biol.

Regulation of the MDCK Cell Tight Junction

Journal of Membrane Biology, 1998
The sodium flux across individual tight junctions (TJ) of low-resistance MDCK cell monolayers grown on glass coverslips was determined as a measure of paracellular permeability. Increases in perfusate glucose concentration from 5 to 25 mM decreased tight junction Na permeability. This permeability decrease was not specific as nonmetabolizable analogues

Integrin expression and localization in normal MDCK cells and transformed MDCK cells lacking apical polarity

Journal of Cell Science, 1994
ABSTRACT Epithelial cells polarize in response to contacts with the extracellular matrix and with neighboring cells. Interac-tions of cells with the extracellular matrix are mediated mainly by the integrin family of receptors. To begin to understand the role of integrins in polarization, we have investigated the expression and ...

Quantitative proteomic analysis of MDCK cell adhesion

Molecular Omics, 2020
Abstract MDCK cells are a key reagent in modern vaccine production. As MDCK cells are normally adherent, creation of suspension cells for vaccine production using genetic engineering approaches is highly desirable. However, little is known regarding the mechanisms and effectors underlying MDCK cell adhesion.

Electrical properties of cultured epithelioid cells (MDCK)

The Journal of Membrane Biology, 1983
This is a study of the intracellular electrical potential, membrane resistance, and capacity of MDCK cells (epithelioid of renal origin) cultured in monolayers on a collagen couch. These monolayers have a transepithelial resistance of 256 +/- 12 (22) ohm cm2 (mean +/- standard error, and number of observations), and the cells have 61.6 +/- 6.3 (92) M ...

Influence of glucose on the toxicity of oxophenylarsine in MDCK cells

Archives of Toxicology, 1995
Trivalent arsenicals like oxophenylarsine (PhAsO) inhibit cellular pyruvate dehydrogenase, thus leading to a drop of acetylCoA formation and a slow-down of the citric acid cycle. Glucose may protect cells from arsenic toxicity, because increased glycolysis may prevent fatal shortage of ATP.

Polarized trafficking of thyrocyte proteins in MDCK cells

Molecular and Cellular Endocrinology, 2002
Recent studies suggest striking similarities between polarized protein sorting in thyrocytes and MDCK epithelial cells, including apical trafficking of thyroglobulin (Tg), thyroid peroxidase, and aminopeptidase N; as well as basolateral targeting of heparan sulfate proteoglycans, thrombospondin 1 (TSP1), type 1 5'-deiodinase, sodium-potassium ATPase ...
