The planar cell polarity protein Vangl2 interacts with the PDZ‐domains of Scribble but not with a unique PDZ‐like domain in Inturned

open access: yesFEBS Letters, EarlyView.
Structural and biochemical characterisations show that the planar cell polarity (PCP) protein Inturned harbours a unique PDZ‐like domain that does not bind canonical PDZ‐binding motifs (PBMs) like that of another PCP protein Vangl2. In contrast, the apical‐basal polarity protein Scribble contains four PDZ domains that bind Vangl2, but one PDZ domain ...

A simple state-based prognostic model for railway turnout systems [PDF]

open access: yes, 2010
The importance of railway transportation has been increasing in the world. Considering the current and future estimates of high cargo and passenger transportation volume in railways, prevention or reduction of delays due to any failure is becoming ever ...

Tau acetylation at K331 has limited impact on tau pathology in vivo

open access: yesFEBS Letters, EarlyView.
We mapped tau post‐translational modifications in humanized MAPT knock‐in mice and in amyloid‐bearing double knock‐in mice. Acetylation within the repeat domain, particularly around K331, showed modest increases under amyloid pathology. To test functional relevance, we generated MAPTK331Q knock‐in mice.

Connecting Diffusion Tensor Information with Mechanical Anisotropy of a Hyper-Viscoelastic Constitutive Model for Brain Tissue [PDF]

open access: yes, 2012
This study aims to test the mechanical behavior of a hyper-viscoelastic fiber-reinforced material for brain tissue which accounts for anisotropic features of the brain thereby exploiting imaging.

Static Model of the Middle Ear Subjected to Reconstruction by Using the “Large Island” Tympanoplasty Technology. Part II: Strain-Stress State

open access: yesМеханика машин, механизмов и материалов, 2009
The mathematical and mechanical model of the reconstructed middle ear subjected to tympanoplasty by using the "large island" technique is constructed. The restored tympanic membrane (TM) is modeled as the system of two concentrically conjugate annular ...

Mechanical characteristics of coal pillars in complex-structure coal seams and optimization of roadway surrounding rock stability

open access: yes河南理工大学学报. 自然科学版
ObjectivesTo address the problems of severe roadway surrounding damage and poor stability during mining of complex-structure coal seams, the failure mechanism of coal pillars under roadway stress was investigated, taking the 10103 face of Baozigou Coal ...

Calpain small subunit homodimerization is robust and calcium‐independent

open access: yesFEBS Letters, EarlyView.
Calpains dimerize via penta‐EF‐hand (PEF) domains. Using single‐molecule force spectroscopy, we measured the strength and kinetics of PEF–PEF homodimer binding. The interaction is robust, shows a transient conformational step before dissociation, and remains largely insensitive to Ca2+.

Structural insights into an engineered feruloyl esterase with improved MHET degrading properties

open access: yesFEBS Letters, EarlyView.
A feruloyl esterase was engineered to mimic key features of MHETase, enhancing the degradation of PET oligomers. Structural and computational analysis reveal how a point mutation stabilizes the active site and reshapes the binding cleft, expading substrate scope.
