Thin Film Mechanics

open access: yes, 2014
This doctoral thesis details the methods of determining mechanical properties of two classes of novel thin films suspended two-dimensional crystals and electron beam irradiated microfilms of polydimethylsiloxane (PDMS). Thin films are used in a variety of surface coatings to alter the opto-electronic properties or increase the wear or corrosion ...

Long-term tending effect on static stability of pure beech (Fagus sylvatica L.) stands

open access: yesJournal of Forest Science, 2020
The production stability together with the provision of required functions are the key requirements for the future existence of stable forest stands. Sufficient mechanic stand stability could be developed by the early and long-term thinning where basic ...

The Impact of Vineyard Mechanization on Grape and Wine Phenolics, Aroma Compounds, and Sensory Properties

open access: yesFermentation, 2022
Grapes are one of the most valuable fruit crops in the United States and can be processed into a variety of products. The grape and wine industry contributes to and impacts the U.S. agricultural economy. However, rising labor costs and global competition

Proteasomal degradation of intracellularly expressed Amblyomin‐X limits suicide gene therapy potential in melanoma cells

open access: yesFEBS Open Bio, EarlyView.
This study explores the feasibility of expressing the antitumoral protein Amblyomin‐X through a suicide gene therapy approach and investigates its intracellular fate after gene delivery. Although the gene is efficiently expressed, melanoma cells rapidly degrade the Amblyomin‐X protein via proteasome activity.

Aspects of automation of selective cleaning [PDF]

open access: yes, 2005
Cleaning (pre-commercial thinning) is a silvicultural operation, primarily used to improve growing conditions of remaining trees in young stands (ca. 3 - 5 m of height). Cleaning costs are considered high in Sweden and the work is laborious.

Electromagnetic Force Distribution and Forming Performance in Electromagnetic Tube Expansion with Axial Compression

open access: yesIEEE Access, 2020
Electromagnetic tube expansion has been given much attention due to its superior cold forming properties. The traditional electromagnetic coil is of single structure, which results in substantial tube wall thinning and mechanical strength reduction. This

Mass spectrometry based identification of AMP‐O‐Tris generated by Thermococcus onnurineus Cas10

open access: yesFEBS Open Bio, EarlyView.
Isolated Thermococcus onnurineus Cas10 generates the noncanonical ATP‐derived product AMP‐O‐Tris while in Tris‐containing buffer as identified via mass spectrometry, revealing relaxed nucleophile selectivity under isolated conditions. These findings suggest that multiprotein Csm complex assembly restricts Cas10 reactivity toward canonical cyclic ...

Mechanical Bloom Thinning of Peach

open access: yesHortScience, 1988
Abstract A mechanical bloom-thinning technique, using suspended flexible strands of rubber belting or rope moved through trees on a frame mounted on a forklift, was tested on ‘Early Loring’ peach [Prunus persica (L.) Batsch]. Heaviest thinning occurred in the upper two-thirds of the tree canopy.

The Puzzling Stability of Monatomic Gold Wires

open access: yes, 1998
We have examined theoretically the spontaneous thinning process of tip-suspended nanowires, and subsequently studied the structure and stability of the monatomic gold wires recently observed by Transmission Electron Microscopy (TEM).

The influence of thinning and prescribed burning on future forest fires in fire-prone regions of Europe

open access: yesEnvironmental Research Letters, 2022
Climate change is expected to increase fire risk in many forested regions, posing a potential threat to forest functioning (i.e. carbon pools and fluxes). At the same time, expansion of the wildland-urban interface threatens to bring more and more people,
