Neuropeptides in the median eminence☆

Neurochemistry International, 1986
The presence and possible sources of more than 30 neuropeptides in the median eminence are summarized. The median eminence is the brain area which contains neuropeptides in the highest number and in the highest concentrations in the central nervous system. This area constitutes the final common pathway for signals from the brain to the pituitary.

The tanycyte of the rat median eminence

Cell and Tissue Research, 1979
The present ultrastructural study proves the existence of nerve terminals closely apposed to the plasmalemmata of tanycytes in the rat median eminence. Several of these "axo-tanycytic" endings display remarkable accumulations of agranular endoplasmic reticulum in the form of pleomorphic vesicles which are closely apposed on either side of the plasma ...

Transport Capacity of Median Eminence

Neuroendocrinology, 2008
The capacity for and mechanism of transport of thyroxine (T4) by the median eminence has been examined in vivo. Following an intravenous injection of 125I-thyroxine, the median eminence accumulates more hormone than either the anterior or posterior pituitary, although it does not achieve a tissue:plasma ratio greater than 1. The uptake of T4&

Ultrastructure of the median eminence of the rat

Zeitschrift fr Zellforschung und Mikroskopische Anatomie, 1966
The ependymal cells bordering the median eminence to the third ventricle are characterised by many microvillus-like projections and bulbous cell processes of the luminal plasma membrane. The latter contain many vesicles 500–1,000 A in diameter. Cilia with 9+2 fibrillar pattern are seen occasionally.

Functions of the Median-Eminence Gland

New England Journal of Medicine, 1966
DR. Hiatt asked me to change the title, "Functions of the Median-Eminence Gland," because he was afraid that no one would know what I was talking about — whether it was the prostate gland or some o...

Ultrastructure of ependymal cells of the shark median eminence

The Anatomical Record, 1974
AbstractThe ultrastructure of ependymal cells of the median eminence in young Pacific blacktip reef sharks is described. Three major cell types have been observed. The first type is an irregularly‐shaped, electron dense cell with many long microvilli and occasional cilia projecting into the ventricle.

Autoradiography of GABA in the rat hypothalamic median eminence

Brain Research, 1980
Light microscopy autoradiographs of the rat hypothalamic median eminence were prepared after injection of high specific activity tritiated GABA and GABA structural analogs. Following intracardiac injection of labeled GABA with short (15 min) survival time, a dense accumulation of silver grains was observed over the external layer of the median eminence.

Neuroendocrine Projections to the Median Eminence

1986
Advertisements in the Sunday newspaper boast of how to command your pituitary gland with a simple tablet, but in fact, regulation of anterior pituitary function is the result of complex interactions of cells in the pituitary with hormones from the gland itself, from peripheral target tissues, and from neurons in the central nervous system.

Alterations in the Countercurrent Gradient by Lesions in the Median Eminence

Nature, 1966
IT is well established that hypertonic urine is produced in. the kidney by means of a countercurrent multiplier system and that the formation of such urine requires a hyper-osmotic medullary interstitium. It is accepted that anti-diuretic hormone regulates the osmolality of the urine so produced by altering the permeability characteristics of" the ...

Functional Electron Microscopy of the Hypothalamic Median Eminence

1970
Publisher Summary The median eminence contains distal portions of several types of axons characterized by size and profile of the granules or vesicles therein. Four types of axons are clearly discernible throughout the vertebrate series (1) axons containing large granules (about 1500 A) and synaptic vesicles, (2) axons containing intermediate ...
