Gut microbiome and aging—A dynamic interplay of microbes, metabolites, and the immune system

open access: yesFEBS Letters, EarlyView.
Age‐dependent shifts in microbial communities engender shifts in microbial metabolite profiles. These in turn drive shifts in barrier surface permeability of the gut and brain and induce immune activation. When paired with preexisting age‐related chronic inflammation this increases the risk of neuroinflammation and neurodegenerative diseases.

Valosin‐containing protein counteracts ATP‐driven dissolution of FUS condensates through its ATPase activity in vitro

open access: yesFEBS Letters, EarlyView.
Biomolecular condensates formed by fused in sarcoma (FUS) are dissolved by high ATP concentrations yet persist in cells. Using a reconstituted system, we demonstrate that valosin‐containing protein (VCP), an AAA+ ATPase, counteracts ATP‐driven dissolution of FUS condensates through its D2 ATPase activity.

Mediation Analysis with Multiple Exposures and Multiple Mediators

open access: yesStatistics in Medicine
ABSTRACTA mediation analysis approach is proposed for multiple exposures, multiple mediators, and a continuous scalar outcome under the linear structural equation modeling framework. It assumes that there exist orthogonal components that demonstrate parallel mediation mechanisms on the outcome, and thus is named principal component mediation analysis ...

Plasma neurofilament light chain mediates the effect of subsyndromal symptomatic depression on cognitive decline in older adults

open access: yesFrontiers in Aging Neuroscience
ObjectiveSubsyndromal symptomatic depression (SSD) is associated with an increased risk of cognitive impairment in non-demented older adults. However, the mechanism underlying this relationship remains unclear.

Diversity and complexity in neural organoids

open access: yesFEBS Letters, EarlyView.
Neural organoid research aims to expand genetic diversity on one side and increase tissue complexity on the other. Chimeroids integrate multiple donor genomes within single organoids. Self‐organising multi‐identity organoids, exogenous cell seeding, or enforced assembly of region‐specific organoids contribute to tissue complexity.

Association between the dietary index for gut microbiota and metabolic syndrome: the mediating role of the dietary inflammatory index

open access: yesFrontiers in Nutrition
BackgroundMetabolic syndrome (MetS) poses a huge global public health challenge. The dietary index for gut microbiota (DI-GM) measures the influence of diets on the microbiome, but its link with the odds of MetS is elusive.

Hyperosmotic stress induces PARP1‐mediated HPF1‐dependent mono(ADP‐ribosyl)ation

open access: yesFEBS Letters, EarlyView.
Sorbitol‐induced hyperosmotic stress rapidly induces reversible mono(ADP‐ribosyl)ation (MARylation) on PARP1 without the signs of genotoxic signaling. We show that PARP1 autoMARylation is HPF1 dependent and forms hydroxylamine‐resistant O‐glycosidic linkages.

Exploring the role of the atherogenic index of plasma as a mediator between body roundness Index and cardiovascular events in older adults: a NHANES-based study

open access: yesFrontiers in Cardiovascular Medicine
BackgroundThe rising incidence of cardiovascular diseases (CVD) in the elderly highlights the need for effective preventive strategies. Recent studies suggest that obesity, through metabolic factors, contributes to the development of CVD. This study aims
