Medullary thyroid carcinoma (MTC) accounts for 5-8% of all thyroid cancers. MTC is mainly sporadic in nature, but an hereditary pattern [multiple endocrine neoplasia type 2 (MEN 2)] is present in 20-30% of cases, transmitted as an autosomal-dominant trait due to germline mutations of the RET proto-oncogene.

Archives of Otolaryngology - Head and Neck Surgery, 1983Medullary cancer of the thyroid is rare but of unusual biologic interest. It originates in the thyroid parafollicular or C cells that are of neural crest origin and that secrete calcitonin. Calcitonin measurements, particularly after pentagastrim administration, are useful in detecting the tumor and following its progression.
