Responses of hyperthermophilic crenarchaea to UV irradiation [PDF]

open access: yes, 2007
This work was supported by a dedicated functional genomics grant from the Swedish Research Council and the Swedish Graduate Research School in Genomics and Bioinformatics to RB, and by grants from the Wellcome Trust and BBSRC to MFW.Background: DNA ...

The membrane repair response masks membrane disturbances caused by cell-penetrating peptide uptake [PDF]

open access: yes, 2009
Although cell-penetrating peptides are able to deliver cargo into cells, their uptake mechanism is still not fully understood and needs to be elucidated to improve their delivery efficiency.

CCDC80 suppresses high‐grade serous ovarian cancer migration via negative regulation of B7‐H3

open access: yesMolecular Oncology, EarlyView.
PAX8 is a lineage‐specific master regulator of transcription in high‐grade serous ovarian cancer (HGSC) progression. We show for the first time that PAX8 facilitates proliferation and metastasis by repressing the cell autonomous tumor suppressor CCDC80 and inducing B7‐H3 expression.

CD47 promotes mitogen‐activated protein kinase and epithelial‐to‐mesenchymal transition molecular programs to drive prometastatic phenotypes in non‐small cell lung cancer

open access: yesMolecular Oncology, EarlyView.
Beyond its role in immune evasion, this study identified that CD47 drives tumor‐intrinsic signaling in non‐small cell lung cancer (NSCLC). Transcriptomic profiling and functional studies revealed that CD47 regulates cell adhesion, migration, and metastasis through an ERK–EMT signaling axis.

A new twist on plasma membrane repair [PDF]

open access: yesCommunicative & Integrative Biology, 2011
Cells in multicellular organisms are under constant mechanical stress, and often the plasma membrane (PM) is compromised. Fortunately, there is a vigorous repair mechanism that rapidly (within seconds) reseals the wound site by fusion with an internal membrane patch.

Heterozygous loss‐of‐function alleles associate the conserved 3′‐5′ exoribonuclease EXOSC10 with hypersensitivity to the anticancer drug 5‐fluorouracil

open access: yesMolecular Oncology, EarlyView.
EXOSC10, an essential nuclear RNA exosome‐associated 3′‐5′ exoribonuclease, is inhibited by the anticancer drug 5‐fluorouracil (5‐FU), and EXOSC10 depletion increases 5‐FU sensitivity. The colon‐cancer variant EXOSC10S402T, located in a proteolysis motif, is stable and nuclear but nonfunctional in vivo.

Annexin A4 and A6 induce membrane curvature and constriction during cell membrane repair [PDF]

open access: yes, 2017
Efficient cell membrane repair mechanisms are essential for maintaining membrane integrity and thus for cell life. Here we show that the Ca2+- and phospholipid-binding proteins annexin A4 and A6 are involved in plasma membrane repair and needed for rapid

Hijacking emergency granulopoiesis: Neutrophil ontogeny and reprogramming in cancer

open access: yesMolecular Oncology, EarlyView.
Neutrophils are highly plastic innate immune cells; their functions in cancer extend beyond the tumour microenvironment. This Review summarises current understanding of neutrophil maturation and heterogeneity and highlights tumour‐induced granulopoiesis as a systemic programme that expands immature, immunosuppressive neutrophils via tumour‐derived ...

Intra-individual comparison of human ankle and knee chondrocytes in vitro: relevance for talar cartilage repair [PDF]

open access: yes, 2009
OBJECTIVE: As compared to knee chondrocytes (KC), talar chondrocytes (TC) have superior synthetic activity and increased resistance to catabolic stimuli. We investigated whether these properties are maintained after TC are isolated and expanded in vitro.

Transcriptional profiling of circulating extracellular vesicles from prebiopsy prostate cancer patients

open access: yesMolecular Oncology, EarlyView.
RNA profiling of circulating extracellular vesicles (EVs) from blood samples of men undergoing prostate biopsy identifies transcripts associated with clinically significant prostate cancer. Integrative analysis with public tumor datasets links EV‐derived gene signatures to tumor stage and progression‐free survival, highlighting CASP3, XRCC2, and RIT1 ...
