Heparan Sulfate Facilitates FGF and BMP Signaling to Drive Mesoderm Differentiation of Mouse Embryonic Stem Cells*

open access: yesJournal of Biological Chemistry, 2012
Background: HS has been implicated in regulating ESC differentiation. Results: Mouse ESCs lacking EXT1 fail to differentiate into mesoderm. Restoration of the FGF and BMP signaling each partially rescued the mesoderm differentiation defect.

Developmental Mechanism of Limb Field Specification along the Anterior–Posterior Axis during Vertebrate Evolution

open access: yesJournal of Developmental Biology, 2016
In gnathostomes, limb buds arise from the lateral plate mesoderm at discrete positions along the body axis. Specification of these limb-forming fields can be subdivided into several steps.

Xwnt-5A: a maternal Wnt that affects morphogenetic movements after overexpression in embryos of Xenopus laevis [PDF]

open access: yes, 1993
To contribute to an understanding of the roles and mechanisms of action of Wnts in early vertebrate development, we have characterized the normal expression of Xenopus laevis Wnt-5A, and investigated the consequences of misexpression of this putative ...

T (Brachyury) is a direct target of Wnt3a during paraxial mesoderm specification.

open access: yesGenes & Development, 1999
Wnt3a encodes a signal that is expressed in the primitive streak of the gastrulating mouse embryo and is required for paraxial mesoderm development. In its absence cells adopt ectopic neural fates.

A comparative molecular approach to mesodermal patterning in basal deuterostomes: the expression pattern of Brachyury in the enteropneust hemichordate Ptychodera flava [PDF]

open access: yes, 1999
This work concerns the formation of mesoderm in the development of an enteropneust hemichordate, Ptychodera flava, and the expression of the Brachyury gene during this process. Brachyury expression occurs in two distinct phases.

In vitro Characteristics of Heterogeneous Equine Hoof Progenitor Cell Isolates

open access: yesFrontiers in Bioengineering and Biotechnology, 2019
Damage to an ectodermal-mesodermal interface like that in the equine hoof and human finger nail bed can permanently alter tissue structure and associated function.

Inverse agonism of retinoic acid receptors directs epiblast cells into the paraxial mesoderm lineage

open access: yesStem Cell Research, 2018
We have investigated the differentiation of paraxial mesoderm from mouse embryonic stem cells utilizing a Tbx6-EYFP/Brachyury (T)-Cherry dual reporter system.
