Metabolomics and Cell Therapy in Diabetes Mellitus [PDF]

open access: yesInternational Journal of Molecular and Cellular Medicine, 2019
Diabetes with a broad spectrum of complications has become a global epidemic metabolic disorder. Till now, several pharmaceutical and non-pharmaceutical therapeutic approaches were applied for its treatment.

Spatial and single‐nuclei transcriptomics reveals idiosyncratic and generic patterns in papillary and anaplastic thyroid cancers

open access: yesMolecular Oncology, EarlyView.
Matched spatial transcriptomics and single‐nuclei RNA‐seq were generated for anaplastic and BRAFV600E papillary thyroid cancers revealing generic and tumor‐specific states occurring in cancer cells and in the tumor microenvironment. In this context, cancer dedifferentiation mirrored organoid maturation through ordered thyroid marker gain/loss ...

Evolution of Metabolic Pathways [PDF]

open access: yes, 2009
The metabolism of organisms is carried out through a series of metabolic pathways. How these ingeniously regulated and collaborated metabolic pathways evolved has been a fascinating and important question for some time.

Intervention to optimise body mass index in adolescents and address the triple burden of malnutrition—the Ntshembo (Hope) trial in rural and urban South Africa study: a study protocol for a randomised controlled trial

open access: yesTrials
Introduction South Africa faces a complex health burden with burgeoning non-communicable diseases against a background of prevalent infection. The triple burden of malnutrition, comprising undernutrition alongside overweight/obesity and micronutrient ...

Circulating microRNA signatures of cachexia and cancer in Canis familiaris as a comparative oncology model for human disease

open access: yesMolecular Oncology, EarlyView.
Circulating microRNAs as biomarkers of cachexia and sex‐specific cancer in senior dogs. In 25 client‐owned dogs, four circulating miRNAs (miR‐15a, miR‐15b, miR‐16, miR‐140) were downregulated in cachexia, with miR‐16 the strongest individual biomarker (AUC = 0.899).

Epigenetic silencing of the liver‐specific lncRNA LUNAR promotes liver cancer progression via NOTCH activation

open access: yesMolecular Oncology, EarlyView.
LUNAR is a liver‐specific long noncoding RNA (lncRNA) that is highly expressed in normal liver but becomes epigenetically silenced in hepatocellular carcinoma through promoter hypermethylation. Loss of LUNAR is associated with NOTCH activation, epithelial–mesenchymal transition, and metastasis, whereas restoring LUNAR restrains metastatic progression ...

Evolutionary Routes to Modern Metabolic Pathways

open access: yesMacromol
Metabolism, the network of biochemical reactions that powers life, arose under conditions radically different from those on Earth today. Investigating its origins reveals how initially simple chemical processes gradually integrated nucleic acid and then ...

Mechanisms and therapeutic opportunities of the ribotoxic stress response in cancer

open access: yesMolecular Oncology, EarlyView.
Cancer cells' high translational demand creates opportunities to therapeutically target ribosome function. Ribosome stalling and collisions activate ZAKα and the ribotoxic stress response (RSR), which can trigger rapid, p53‐independent apoptosis in cancer.

Profiling neoadjuvant therapy response in rectal cancer using meta‐analysis of publicly available transcriptomic RNA‐seq datasets

open access: yesMolecular Oncology, EarlyView.
This study integrates publicly available transcriptomic datasets to identify molecular signatures associated with response to neoadjuvant chemoradiotherapy in locally advanced rectal cancer. By analyzing a combination of multiple cohorts with bioinformatics approaches, we reveal biological pathways and immune‐related features that may improve ...

The VHL tumor suppressor at the crossroad of protein folding, aggregation, and cancer

open access: yesMolecular Oncology, EarlyView.
Mutations, environmental stress, and chaperone dysfunction can destabilize pVHL, promoting its conversion from the native folded state into amyloid‐like assemblies. This transition may contribute to protein storage, cell dormancy, survival, and drug resistance.
