Accuracy of spirometry for detection of asthma: a cross-sectional study

open access: yesSão Paulo Medical Journal
BACKGROUND: Asthma is a chronic inflammatory disease with airway hyperresponsiveness. Spirometry is the most commonly used test among asthmatic patients. Another functional test used for diagnosing asthma is the bronchial challenge test. The aim of this

The Concise Guide to PHARMACOLOGY 2025/26: G protein‐coupled receptors

open access: yesBritish Journal of Pharmacology, Volume 182, Issue S1, Page S24-S151, December 2025.
The Concise Guide to Pharmacology 2025/26 marks the seventh edition in this series of biennial publications in the British Journal of Pharmacology. Presented in landscape format, the guide provides a comparative overview of the pharmacology of drug target families. The concise nature of the Concise Guide refers to the style of presentation, being clear,

Differential Modulation of Dopamine D2 Receptor on Somatostatin and Parvalbumin Interneurons in the CA1 Area of the Dorsal Hippocampus

open access: yesEuropean Journal of Neuroscience, Volume 62, Issue 1, July 2025.
In this current study, we investigated the cellular mechanisms underlying dopaminergic modulation in the hippocampus by combining pharmacology and electrophysiology in organotypic hippocampal slices. We identified that dopamine D2 receptors are expressed in somatostatin and, to a lesser extent, parvalbumin interneurons.

Systemic EP4 receptor agonist and Arginase‐1 therapy in a murine model of chronic asthma and influenza virus‐induced asthma exacerbation

open access: yesBritish Journal of Pharmacology, Volume 182, Issue 12, Page 2803-2820, June 2025.
Background and Purpose Myeloid‐derived suppressor cells (MDSCs) play important roles in the pathogenesis of asthma. Recent studies demonstrate that their function can be modulated by different pharmacological approaches. In this study, we focussed on the effects of systemically administered prostaglandin EP4 receptor agonist L‐902,688 and pegylated ...

STING‐dependent induction of neutrophilic asthma exacerbation in response to house dust mite

open access: yesAllergy, Volume 80, Issue 3, Page 715-737, March 2025.
This study investigates whether STING‐induced neutrophilic lung inflammation mimics severe asthma. STING activation during allergic challenge triggers neutrophilic asthma accompanied by a Th1 and pro‐inflammatory cytokine in addition to the Th2 cytokines resulting in an epithelial barrier damage, cell death and self‐dsDNA release with increased mucus ...

Agonism of the TMEM16A Calcium-Activated Chloride Channel Modulates Airway Smooth Muscle Tone.

open access: yesAmerican Journal of Physiology - Lung cellular and Molecular Physiology, 2019
TMEM16A (anoctamin 1) is an important calcium-activated chloride channel (CaCC) in airway smooth muscle (ASM). We have previously shown that TMEM16A antagonists such as benzbromarone relax ASM and have proposed TMEM16A antagonists as novel therapies for ...

On the health effects of curcumin and its derivatives

open access: yesFood Science &Nutrition, Volume 12, Issue 11, Page 8623-8650, November 2024.
Curcuma longa has therapeutic properties that have gained prodigious consideration from scientists in the medical field—review of the existing clinical and animal studies of curcumin and its by‐products. The biological properties of curcumin, also known as 1,7‐bis (4‐hydroxy‐3‐methoxyphenyl)‐1,6‐heptadiene‐3,5‐dione, or diferuloylmethane, include anti ...

Effect of salbutamol on pulmonary responsiveness in chronic pulmonary allergic inflammation in guinea pigs

open access: yesBrazilian Journal of Medical and Biological Research, 2005
Beta-2-agonists have been widely used by asthmatic subjects to relieve their obstructive symptoms. However, there are reports that continuous use could lead to loss of bronchial protection and exacerbation of asthma symptoms.

The impact of IL‐10 and IL‐17 on myeloid‐derived suppressor cells in vitro and in vivo in a murine model of asthma

open access: yesEuropean Journal of Immunology, Volume 54, Issue 7, July 2024.
IL‐10 and IL‐17 exhibited diverse impacts on regulating MDSCs and airway inflammation. In vitro, IL‐10 deficiency increased polymorphonuclear (PMN)‐MDSC numbers without affecting their suppressive activity in bone marrow, lung, and spleen. In the asthma model, IL‐17 deficiency decreased monocytic (M)‐MDSC numbers and suppressive activity in the lung ...
