Methadone Maintenance Treatment-A Reply
The American Journal of Drug and Alcohol Abuse, 1977In 1965, Dole and Nyswander published the results of their initial experiences with using the drug methadone as a maintenance treatment for chronic heroin addicts [1]. The results were very encouraging and set off a tide of both medical and public expectations as to the ability to successfully treat what had been seen as an almost untreatable problem ...

Alcohol Consumption during Methadone Maintenance Treatment
European Addiction Research, 2000Alcohol consumption during methadone maintenance treatment (MMT) often becomes a problem. We investigated a group of 68 patients undergoing MMT in our care. Methadone maintenance treatment: An update
European Archives of Psychiatry and Clinical Neuroscience, 1995Available data (this review includes old major articles and recent articles) show that, although results are heterogeneous, methadone maintenance treatments (MMTs) have a real efficiency not only to reduce illicit opiate abuse (50-80% of patients under MMT did not use heroin in the preceding month) but also to reduce criminality, HIV risks and ...

Antidepressant Treatment in Methadone Maintenance Patients
Journal of Addictive Diseases, 1995We review the controlled trials of antidepressant treatment in methadone patients. Several studies show antidepressant effects, but none demonstrate clear improvement in drug abuse. This is contrary to "self-medication" but rather suggests depression is either independent or substance induced.

Quality Improvement for Methadone Maintenance Treatment
Substance Use & Misuse, 2000Negative community attitudes toward heroin addicts and toward methadone treatment are the major obstacles to providing good treatment. Negative attitudes find expression in inappropriate and constricting regulation of treatment, and in inadequate resources to support programs. They contribute to the ambivalence of patients in treatment.

Counseling Issues in Methadone Maintenance Treatment
Journal of Psychoactive Drugs, 1991This article reviews some of the issues and dilemmas faced by methadone maintenance treatment (MMT) programs counselors. The context in which MMT occurs sets the tone and constraints within which clinicians must find ways to be effective; negative attitudes and tensions with regulatory agencies have a strong impact.

Withdrawal from Methadone Maintenance Treatment
European Addiction Research, 2002Although factors associated with successful termination of methadone maintenance treatment (MMT) have been well studied, the question of why certain methadone patients try to taper off methadone while others do not is still unanswered. Those patients who wish to continue MMT should of course be allowed to stay in treatment.
