Nicotine Effects and the Endogenous Opioid System

open access: yesJournal of Pharmacological Sciences, 2014
.: Nicotine (NIC) is an exogenous ligand of the nicotinic acetylcholine receptor (nAChR), and it influences various functions in the central nervous system. Systemic administration of NIC elicits the release of endogenous opioids (endorphins, enkephalins,

Numerical Comparisons of Three Recently Proposed Algorithms in the Protein Folding Problem [PDF]

open access: yesJ. Comput. Chem. 18 (1997) 920 -933, 1997
We compare numerically the effectiveness of three recently proposed algorithms, multicanonical simulations, simulations in a 1/k-ensemble, and simulated tempering for the protein folding problem. For this we perform simulations with high statistics for one of the simplest peptides, Met-enkephalin.

INHIBITORY ACTIONS OF METHIONINE‐ENKEPHALIN AND MORPHINE ON THE CAT CAROTID CHEMORECEPTORS

open access: yesBritish Journal of Pharmacology, 1980
1 The effects of intracarotid injections of methionine‐enkephalin (Met‐enkephalin) and morphine on chemoreceptor activity recorded from the peripheral end of a sectioned carotid sinus nerve have been studied in cats anaesthetized with pentobarbitone.

Resolution exchange simulation with incremental coarsening [PDF]

open access: yesarXiv, 2006
We previously developed an algorithm, called resolution exchange, which improves canonical sampling of atomic resolution models by swapping conformations between high- and low-resolution simulations[1]. Here, we demonstrate a generally applicable incremental coarsening procedure and apply the algorithm to a larger peptide, met-enkephalin.

Monte Carlo Protein Folding: Simulations of Met-Enkephalin with Solvent-Accessible Area Parameterizations [PDF]

open access: yesarXiv, 2004
Treating realistically the ambient water is one of the main difficulties in applying Monte Carlo methods to protein folding. The solvent-accessible area method, a popular method for treating water implicitly, is investigated by means of Metropolis simulations of the brain peptide Met-Enkephalin.

The Biosynthetic Order of Amino Acid Addition to the Genetic Code [PDF]

open access: yesarXiv, 2002
The previously formulated model for the evolution of the genetic code was shown to clarify why base triplets of some precursor amino acids differ by a single base from product amino acid codons, while others show less homology. First, the model indicated that the direction of code evolution changed on expansion from the N-fixers code (stage 2).
