Type I Photosensitized Oxidation of Methionine†
Photochemistry and Photobiology, 2020AbstractMethionine (Met) is an essential sulfur‐containing amino acid, sensitive to oxidation. The oxidation of Met can occur by numerous pathways, including enzymatic modifications and oxidative stress, being able to cause relevant alterations in protein functionality.

The Role of Transamination in Methionine Oxidation in the Rat
The Journal of Nutrition, 1978The role of transamination as the initial step in catabolism of methionine in the rat was investigated. [Methyl-14C] or [1-14C]-L-Methionine was added to tissue homogenates and transamination was determined from the counts recovered in a precipitable phenylhydrazone following treatment of the samples with 2,4-dinitrophenylhydrazine.

The physiological role of reversible methionine oxidation
Biochimica Et Biophysica Acta - Proteins and Proteomics, 2014Sulfur-containing amino acids such as cysteine and methionine are particularly vulnerable to oxidation. Oxidation of cysteine and methionine in their free amino acid form renders them unavailable for metabolic processes while their oxidation in the protein-bound state is a common post-translational modification in all organisms and usually alters the ...

Proteomics methods to study methionine oxidation
Mass Spectrometry Reviews, 2013AbstractThe oxidation and consequent reduction of protein‐bound methionine residues is of great interest in understanding different aspects of how oxidative stress affects protein functions and cellular signaling. To date, few technologies are available for the study of methionine sulfoxides.

Inactivation of Methionine Synthase by Nitrous Oxide
European Journal of Biochemistry, 1980Exposure of rats to a 50% N2O/oxygen mixture led to a rapid loss of methionine synthase activity in both liver and brain. This enzyme has vitamin B12 as a cofactor. There was impaired conversion of deoxyuridine to deoxythymidine by bone marrow cells and this defect followed loss of methionine synthase activity. There was no homocystinuria.

Detection and Measurement of Methionine Oxidation in Proteins
Current Protocols in Protein Science, 2017AbstractMethionine oxidation is a prevalent modification found in proteins both in biological settings and in the manufacturing of biotherapeutic molecules. In cells, the oxidation of specific methionine sites can modulate protein function or promote interactions that trigger signaling pathways. In biotherapeutic development, the formation of oxidative

Myeloperoxidase‐mediated oxidation of methionine
Journal of Cellular Physiology, 1982AbstractThe myeloperoxidase‐mediated oxidation of methionine was studied using a purified canine myeloperoxidase preparation. The system required the simultaneous presence of myeloperoxidase, H2O2, and a halide anion. When 0.1 mM H2O2 was used, the system has a pH optimum of approximately pH 5–5.5.

Methionine oxidation inhibits fibrillation of human α-synuclein in vitro
We examined the effect of methionine oxidation of human recombinant α-synuclein on its structural properties and propensity to fibrillate. Both oxidized and non-oxidized α-synucleins were natively unfolded under conditions of neutral pH, with the ...

We report an in-depth study on the gas-phase reactions of singlet O2[a(1)Δg] with methionine (Met) at different ionization and hydration states (including deprotonated [Met - H](-), hydrated deprotonated [Met - H](-)(H2O)1,2, and hydrated protonated MetH(+)(H2O)1,2), using guided-ion-beam scattering mass spectrometry.
