Methylglyoxal and cell viability
International Journal of Biochemistry, 1994Methylglyoxal by depleting glutathione stores increased Trypan-blue uptake by the cells incubated in glucose, pyruvate and amino acids free medium. Only a transient fall of glutathione concentration without any effect on cell viability was caused by methylglyoxal when the medium was supplemented with above-mentioned compounds.

Methylglyoxal, obesity, and diabetes
Endocrine, 2012Methylglyoxal (MG) is a highly reactive compound derived mainly from glucose and fructose metabolism. This metabolite has been implicated in diabetic complications as it is a strong AGE precursor. Furthermore, recent studies suggested a role for MG in insulin resistance and beta-cell dysfunction. Although several drugs have been developed in the recent

Abstract [ 14 C]Dihydroxyacetone phosphate labeled in either the C-1 or C-3 position was enzymatically synthesized, isolated, and utilized as a substrate for crystalline methylglyoxal synthase purified from Proteus vulgaris . After reaction with the enzyme, the methyl carbon of methylglyoxal 3 was identified as CHI 3 by the iodoform reaction ...

Glycerol and Methylglyoxal Metabolism
EcoSal Plus, 2005The metabolic connection between glycerol and methylglyoxal (MG) is principally that DHAP, which is an intermediate in the aerobic breakdown of glycerol, is also the major precursor of MG, being the substrate for methylglyoxal synthase (MGS).

Methylglyoxal Bis(guanylhydrazone) Analogs VI. Methylglyoxal Bis(guanylhydrazone) Pamoate
Journal of Pharmaceutical Sciences, 1968The pamoate of methylglyoxal bis(guanylhydrazone) was prepared. This compound, on a molar basis, is more active and less toxic than the corresponding dihydrochloride salt against leukemia L-1210.

Metabolic Transit of Dietary Methylglyoxal
Journal of Agricultural and Food Chemistry, 2013Methylglyoxal (MGO) is responsible for the pronounced antibacterial activity of manuka honey, in which it may reach concentrations up to 800 mg/kg. As MGO formed in vivo is discussed to play a role in diabetic complications, the metabolic transit of dietary MGO was studied within a 3 day dietary recall with four healthy volunteers. Determination of MGO

Methylglyoxal and glyoxalase I in atherosclerosis
Biochemical Society Transactions, 2014Cardiovascular disease, caused predominantly by atherosclerotic plaque rupture, remains one of the leading causes of death. However, the mechanism of plaque rupture remains largely unknown. Recent studies have linked high metabolic activity in inflamed atherosclerotic plaques to the development of plaque rupture.

A “Turn-On” Fluorescent Sensor for Methylglyoxal
Journal of the American Chemical Society, 2013Methylglyoxal (MGO), a dicarbonyl metabolite produced by all living cells, has been associated with a number of human diseases. However, studies of the role(s) MGO plays biologically have been handicapped by a lack of direct methods for its monitoring and detection.

Methylglyoxal in food and living organisms
Molecular Nutrition & Food Research, 2006AbstractMethylglyoxal (MG) is a highly reactive α‐oxoaldehyde formed endogenously in numerous enzymatic and nonenzymatic reactions. It modifies arginine and lysine residues in proteins forming advanced glycation end‐products such as Nδ‐(5‐methyl‐4‐imidazolon‐2‐yl)‐L‐ornithine (MG‐H1), 2‐amino‐5‐(2‐amino‐5‐hydro‐5‐methyl‐4‐imidazolon‐1‐yl)pentanoic acid
