Revisiting the Gateway Drug Hypothesis for Cannabis: A Secondary Analysis of a Nationwide Survey Among Community Users in Japan

This study reexamines the gateway drug hypothesis for cannabis using data from 3900 community‐based users in Japan. Findings show that cannabis is typically preceded by alcohol and tobacco and rarely leads to methamphetamine or other illicit drug use, challenging the hypothesis in the Japanese context.
