Echinocandins – structure, mechanism of action and use in antifungal therapy

open access: yesJournal of Enzyme Inhibition and Medicinal Chemistry, 2022
With increasing number of immunocompromised patients as well as drug resistance in fungi, the risk of fatal fungal infections in humans increases as well.

A successful daptomycin and micafungin dosing strategy in veno‐venous ECMO and continuous renal replacement

open access: yesJournal of Clinical Pharmacy and Therapeutics, 2021
Studies have demonstrated that ECMO leads to pharmacokinetic changes, with alterations in volume of distribution, clearance and drug sequestration by the circuit. We describe a successful dosing approach for daptomycin and micafungin for the treatment of

Antifungal Activity of Micafungin in Serum [PDF]

open access: yesAntimicrobial Agents and Chemotherapy, 2009
ABSTRACT We have evaluated the antifungal activity of micafungin in serum by using the disk diffusion method with serum-free and serum-added micafungin standard curves. Serum samples from micafungin-treated patients have been shown to exhibit adequate antifungal activity, which was in proportion to both the applied dose and the actual ...

In Silico Identification and In Vitro Validation of Repurposed Compounds Targeting the RSV Polymerase

open access: yesMicroorganisms, 2023
Respiratory Syncytial Virus (RSV) is the top cause of infant hospitalization globally, with no effective treatments available. Researchers have sought small molecules to target the RNA-dependent RNA Polymerase (RdRP) of RSV, which is essential for ...

Micafungin Is an Efficient Treatment of Multi Drug-Resistant Candida glabrata Urosepsis: A Case Report

open access: yesJournal of Fungi, 2021
Candiduria is a common nosocomial infection in hospitalized patients, which may progress into life-threatening candidemia. Successful treatment of urosepsis requires early and effective antifungal therapy, while the available agents within three ...

Nebulized Micafungin Treatment for Scopulariopsis/Microascus Tracheobronchitis in Lung Transplant Recipients

open access: yesAntimicrobial Agents and Chemotherapy, 2021
Scopulariopsis/Microascus isolates cause infections with high mortality in lung transplant recipients. Treatment is challenging due to antimicrobial resistance.

Assessing the effect of micafungin on Pseudomonas aeruginosa biofilm formation using confocal microscopy and gene expression

open access: yesJournal of Infection in Developing Countries, 2018
Introduction: 1,3-β-D-glucan of the fungal cell wall and extracellular matrix (ECM) of Candida biofilm is also present as a periplasmic glucan and within the ECM of P. aeruginosa biofilm. Micafungin inhibits the synthesis of β-D-glucans.

Breakthrough Invasive Candidiasis in Patients on Micafungin [PDF]

open access: yesJournal of Clinical Microbiology, 2010
ABSTRACT For Candida species, a bimodal wild-type MIC distribution for echinocandins exists, but resistance to echinocandins is rare. We characterized isolates from patients with invasive candidiasis (IC) breaking through ≥3 doses of micafungin therapy during the first 28 months of its use at our center ...

Persistent candida arthritis successfully treated with micafungin instillation and surgery. A case report

open access: yesMedical Mycology Case Reports, 2020
We report a rare case of C. krusei knee arthritis treated with instillation of micafungin and arthroscopy. A 49-year-old man hospitalized for treatment of Acute Myeloid Leukemia developed knee arthritis with C. krusei.

Pharmacokinetics of Micafungin in Critically Ill Patients [PDF]

open access: yesScientific Reports, 2019
AbstractWe investigated covariates of pharmacokinetics of micafungin in critically ill patients. After application of micafungin, plasma samples were collected. Non-linear mixed effects modelling (NONMEM 7.3) was used to develop the pharmacokinetic model. Using this model, the adequacy of a fixed 100 mg dosing regimen was evaluated in the study cohort.
