Learning Microbial Interaction Networks from Metagenomic Count Data [PDF]
Many microbes associate with higher eukaryotes and impact their vitality. In order to engineer microbiomes for host benefit, we must understand the rules of community assembly and maintenence, which in large part, demands an understanding of the direct interactions between community members.

From microbial fuel cell (MFC) to microbial electrochemical snorkel (MES): maximizing chemical oxygen demand (COD) removal from wastewater [PDF]
The paper introduces the concept of the microbial electrochemical snorkel (MES), a simplified design of a “short-circuited” microbial fuel cell (MFC). The MES cannot provide current but it is optimized for wastewater treatment.

Silymarin, derived from Silybum marianum (milk thistle) seeds, is known for its anti-oxidative properties. The study examines how various concentrations of silymarin (0, 25, 50, and 100 mg/L) affect anti-oxidative activity, phenolic content, pH ...

Gut microbiome and aging—A dynamic interplay of microbes, metabolites, and the immune system
Age‐dependent shifts in microbial communities engender shifts in microbial metabolite profiles. These in turn drive shifts in barrier surface permeability of the gut and brain and induce immune activation. When paired with preexisting age‐related chronic inflammation this increases the risk of neuroinflammation and neurodegenerative diseases.

Effect of lactic acid and acetic acid on the quality of local meat [PDF]
Effect of lactic acid and acetic acid spray on the quality and shelf-life extension of fresh beef stored at 4oC was investigated. Lactic and acetic acid were sprayed over the meat at various concentrations of 0 (control), 2% lactic acid (L.A.), 4% L.A ...

Microbial Counts on Chicken Purchased at Retail
Abstract Whole chickens or chicken parts were purchased from retail stores and taken immediately to the laboratory. Fresh product was sampled immediately, while frozen product obtained from one store was thawed for 24 hours at 5°C. prior to sampling. Swab samples were taken and total counts made as described by May (1961).

We present robust protocols for the preparation of supported lipid bilayers (SLBs) incorporating either Salmonella smooth LPS or outer membrane vesicles (OMVs). We use a combination of quartz crystal microbalance with dissipation (QCM‐D) and fluorescence microscopy to both characterize the SLBs of various compositions and to probe their interactions ...

Design and analysis strategies for robust microbiome ageing research
The gut microbiome changes with age and associates with age‐related morbidity and mortality, establishing it as a potential biomarker and intervention target for ageing. Realising this potential requires methodological rigour, yet distinguishing biological signals from methodological artefacts remains challenging across cohorts. This review provides an
