Multiple Micronutrient Malnutrition
2008The basic cause of malnutrition (protein-energy malnutrition [PEM] and micronutrient malnutrition) is poverty. Although lack of care, health, and environmental conditions are important components in the etiology of malnutrition, lack of access to food is still one of the major underlying causes of malnutrition.

Micronutrients in the Treatment of Stunting and Moderate Malnutrition
2012Linear growth retardation or stunting may occur with or without low weight-for-age, but in both cases stunted or moderately malnourished children are deficient in micronutrients. Pregnancy and the first 2 years are critical periods. Dietary deficiency of zinc, iron, calcium, and vitamin A are especially common and often occur together.

Coordinated Strategies for Controlling Micronutrient Malnutrition: A Technical Workshop
The Journal of Nutrition, 1993Participants in a November 1991 workshop concluded that coordinated strategies for controlling malnutrition due to iodine, iron, vitamin A and other micronutrients deficiencies are technically feasible and should be given consideration in planning control efforts.

Effect of micronutrient malnutrition on periodontal disease and periodontal therapy
Periodontology 2000, 2018AbstractPeriodontitis is a complex chronic inflammatory noncommunicable disease, initiated by the development of a dysbiotic microbial plaque biofilm below the gingival margin. Whilst the pathogenic biofilm is a “necessary cause” of periodontitis, it is insufficient on its own to cause the disease, and a destructive immune‐inflammatory response is a ...

Addressing Micronutrient Malnutrition in Urban Settings
2015Access to nutritious foods for those living in poor urban settings is often more of a problem than the availability of these foods. This chapter describes a proven and effective strategy to impact food quality in urban settings through the implementation of national, mandatory food fortification programs.
