Mid-Infrared Laser Surgery

1991
Present CO2 laser instruments for general surgery offer many advantages over conventional methods with scalpels and cauterizers yet there are still many limitations. A particularly critical one is the damage to tissue adjacent to that ablated by the laser energy.

Mid-infrared quantum cascade lasers

Proceedings of LEOS'94, 2002
The achievement of laser action associated with intersubband transitions opens the door to a new class of infrared sources in a technologically important spectral region. Recently, we have demonstrated low temperature lasing action using a coupled-well structure with a graded-gap electron injector imbedded in a waveguide.

Dysprosium mid-infrared fibre lasers

2022
Optical sources in the mid-infrared have enabled an increasing number of applications in fields such as sensing, materials processing, and defence. While traditional mid-IR sources have often been based on nonlinear conversion in parametric oscillator devices, these systems are bulky, costly, and inefficient. In contrast, the past few decades have seen

Advances in Mid-Infrared Fiber Lasers

2008
The current state of the art in mid-infrared fiber laser research is reviewed. The relevant glass and ceramic fiber host matkrials and the fiber, pump, and resonator geometries are introduced. Lasers operating on transitions ranging from 1.9 to 4 pm occurring in the rare-earth-ions $Tm^{3+}$, $HO^{3+}$,$Er^{3+}$ and $Dy^{3+}$ and their population ...

Scalable pulsed mid-infrared laser

SPIE Proceedings, 2003
We demonstrate the use of an Nd:YAG laser to optically pump an HBr gas laser, a concept combining the advanctages of solid-state and gas-laser technologies. A Q-switched Nd:YAG laser, tuned to 1.34 μm and frequency-stabilized, excites the v=3, J=5 state of HBr in a third-overtone transition.

Unipolar mid-infrared semiconductor lasers

Conference Proceedings. 1997 International Conference on Indium Phosphide and Related Materials, 2002
The quantum cascade (QC) laser is an excellent example of how quantum engineering can be used to design new laser materials and related light sources. It is based on intersubband transitions between excited states of coupled quantum wells and on resonant tunneling as the pumping mechanism.

Mid-Infrared Laser Phosphors

2001
Abstract : The main goal of this project was to investigate doped nanodielectrics as optical materials in which strong scattering conditions offer prospects of laser phosphors and uniquely intense mid-infrared light sources. The one year effort on this project was expected to provide new materials for this purpose and to analyze their emissions ...

Mid-infrared whispering gallery lasers

The 16th Annual Meeting of the IEEE Lasers and Electro-Optics Society, 2003. LEOS 2003., 2004
This paper reports the first mid-infrared ring laser diode based on InAs and grown by liquid phase epitaxy (LPE). Coherent emission for a 200 /spl mu/m ring resonator was obtained near 3.0 /spl mu/m at 80 K. The individual modes exhibit hardly any wavelength shift with increasing injection current.

Type-II mid-infrared lasers

SPIE Proceedings, 2000
Recent progress towards the realization of high-power, non- cryogenic (quasi-)cw mid-IR lasers based on the `W' configuration of the active region is reported. Type-II diodes with AlGaAsSb broadened-waveguide separate confinement regions are the first III-V interband lasers to achieve room-temperature pulsed operation at a wavelength longer than 3 ...
