Differential transcriptional response of Bifidobacterium longum to human milk, formula milk and galactooligosaccharide

open access: yes, 2008
In order to gain insight into the effects of human breast milk on the development of the intestinal bifidobacteria and associated health effects, the transcriptome of Bifidobacterium longum LMG 13197 grown in breast milk and formula milk containing ...

Induction of the viable but non-culturable state in bacterial pathogens by household cleaners and inorganic salts

open access: yesScientific Reports, 2018
Effective monitoring of microbial pathogens is essential for a successful preventive food safety and hygiene strategy. However, as most monitoring strategies are growth-based, these tests fail to detect pathogenic bacteria that have entered the viable ...

Acute caffeine treatment protects the developing retina from ischemia‐induced cell death

open access: yesFEBS Open Bio, EarlyView.
Caffeine reduces cell death in the developing retina under ischemia (OGD). This effect does not involve BDNF upregulation or antioxidant pathways (NRF2/VEGF). Neuroprotection occurs mainly through adenosine A2A receptor antagonism, decreasing glutamate release and excitotoxicity, highlighting caffeine's potential as an acute neuroprotective agent in ...

Effects of 5,6-dimethylbenzimidazole and cobalt supplementation in high-concentrate diets on rumen fermentation and microorganisms and ruminal metabolome in sheep

open access: yesBMC Veterinary Research
Background Regular use of high-concentrate diets can improve the growth of animals, especially high-yielding cattle and sheep. However, high-concentrate diets can alter rumen fermentation and microbial community structure, leading to rumen acidosis ...

One size does not fit all: An in vitro evaluation of the effects of bezafibrate and medroxyprogesterone acetate on human SH‐SY5Y and U‐87 MG cancer cells

open access: yesFEBS Open Bio, EarlyView.
Drugs previously repurposed to target blood cancers reduced neuroblastoma and glioblastoma cell growth and viability. However, their levels of anticancer activity were different and their clinical application may be problematic due to side effects at effective doses.

UiO‐66 metal–organic frameworks in biomedicine: From structural tunability to bioimaging, photodiagnostics, and photodynamic cancer therapy

open access: yesFEBS Open Bio, EarlyView.
UiO‐66(Zr) metal–organic frameworks are chemically stable, biocompatible, and highly tunable nanomaterials. Their modular structure enables controlled drug delivery, multimodal bioimaging, and light‐activated photodynamic therapy, supporting integrated diagnostic and therapeutic (theranostic) applications in cancer and biomedical research.

Hydrostatic pressure activates HIF‐1α via β‐catenin to promote stemness in breast cancer cells

open access: yesFEBS Open Bio, EarlyView.
To mimic the elevated intestinal fluid pressure in breast cancers, we loaded human breast cancer cells (MCF‐7, MDA‐MB‐453, and BT‐474) to 50 mmHg hydrostatic pressure. Hydrostatic pressure exposure upregulated HIF‐1α and induced stemness in MCF‐7 and BT‐474 cells.

Synbiotic combination of Bifidobacterium longum BB536 and lactulose improves the presenteeism of healthy adults associated with aromatic lactic acids - A single-arm, open-label study

open access: yesGut Microbes Reports
Gut microbiota and their metabolites are crucial for metabolic regulation, immunomodulation, and brain and mental functions via the brain-gut axis. Synbiotics offer an effective strategy for improving gut health by modulating gut microbiota, leading to ...
