Investigating the biological properties of carbohydrate derived fulvic acid (CHD-FA) as a potential novel therapy for the management of oral biofilm infections. [PDF]

open access: yes, 2013
Background: A number of oral diseases, including periodontitis, derive from microbial biofilms and are associated with increased antimicrobial resistance.

Methicillin-Resistant Staphylococcus aureus and Vancomycin: Minimum Inhibitory Concentration Matters [PDF]

open access: yesClinical Infectious Diseases, 2012
These investigators found that elevated vancomycin MICs were associated with increased mortality in patients with MRSA infections, a result mostly driven by outcomes of bloodstream infections (BSIs). In contrast, excess mortality in association with elevated MICs was not seen in non-BSI MRSA infections.

Linking neurogenesis, oligodendrogenesis, and myelination defects to neurodevelopmental disruption in primary mitochondrial disorders

open access: yesFEBS Letters, EarlyView.
Mitochondrial remodeling shapes neural and glial lineage progression by matching metabolic supply with demand. Elevated OXPHOS supports differentiation and myelin formation, while myelin compaction lowers mitochondrial dependence, revealing mitochondria as key drivers of developmental energy adaptation.

Inhibitory Efficacy of Thymus vulgaris and Origanum onites Essential Oils on Enterococcus faecalis Biofilm

open access: yesBezmiâlem Science
Objective: The crucial aim of irrigation solutions used in root canal treatments is the elimination of biofilm which is considered an important virulence factor of Enterococcusfaecalis.

Antibacterial effects of extracts of Ocimum gratissimum and piper guineense on Escherichia coli and Staphylococcus aureus [PDF]

open access: yes, 2009
The upsurge in the prevalence of side effects of many synthetic antimicrobial agents and incidence of multidrug resistant bacteria has spurred scientists on the research for plant based antimicrobial of therapeutic potentials.

Development of antiseptic adaptation and cross-adapatation in selected oral pathogens in vitro [PDF]

open access: yes, 2019
There is evidence that pathogenic bacteria can adapt to antiseptics upon repeated exposure. More alarming is the concomitant increase in antibiotic resistance that has been described for some pathogens.

pH‐mediated activation of the lysosomal arginine sensor SLC38A9

open access: yesFEBS Letters, EarlyView.
Cells monitor nutrient levels via the lysosomal transporter SLC38A9 to activate the mechanistic target of rapamycin complex 1 (mTORC1). This study reveals that SLC38A9 function is regulated by pH. We identified histidine 544 as a critical pH sensor that undergoes conformational changes to control amino acid efflux from lysosomes; therefore, it ...

Antibacterial and anti-quorum sensing activities of selected italian honeys against antibiotic-resistant pathogens [PDF]

open access: yes, 2015
Three nectar honeys (eucalyptus, thyme and forest) and two honeydew honeys (fir and Metcalfa) from Italy were tested for their antibacterial activity against pathogens commonly associated with wound and burn infections, including methicillin-resistant ...

The neural crest‐associated gene ERRFI1 is involved in melanoma progression and resistance toward targeted therapy

open access: yesMolecular Oncology, EarlyView.
ERRFI1, a neural crest (NC)‐associated gene, was upregulated in melanoma and negatively correlated with the expression of melanocytic differentiation markers and the susceptibility of melanoma cells toward BRAF inhibitors (BRAFi). Knocking down ERRFI1 significantly increased the sensitivity of melanoma cells to BRAFi.
