Cannabis (THC) Aggravates the Deleterious Effects of Alcohol (EtOH) on Skeletal Muscles’ Mitochondrial Respiration: Modulation by Age and Metabolic Phenotypes

open access: yesBiology
The anti-inflammatory and analgesic properties of cannabis might be useful to treat muscle diseases, including those linked or not to alcohol. Nevertheless, delta 9 tetrahydrocannabinol (THC) and ethanol (EtOH), often used concomitantly, can have ...

MitoSeg: Mitochondria Segmentation Tool [PDF]

open access: yes
Recent studies suggest a potential link between the physical structure of mitochondria and neurodegenerative diseases. With advances in Electron Microscopy techniques, it has become possible to visualize the boundary and internal membrane structures of mitochondria in detail.

Mitochondria-lysosome contacts regulate mitochondrial Ca2+ dynamics via lysosomal TRPML1

open access: yesProceedings of the National Academy of Sciences of the United States of America, 2020
Significance Mitochondria and lysosomes are critical for cellular homeostasis and defects in both organelles are observed in several diseases. Recently, contact sites between mitochondria and lysosomes were identified and found to modulate mitochondrial ...

Genomics‐led approach to drug testing in models of undifferentiated pleomorphic sarcoma

open access: yesMolecular Oncology, EarlyView.
GA text Genomic data from undifferentiated pleomorphic sarcoma patients and preclinical models were used to inform a targeted drug screen. Selected compounds were tested in 2D and 3D cultures of UPS cell lines. A combination of trametinib and infigratinib was synergistic in the majority of UPS cell lines tested, which was further confirmed in an ex ...

Mitochondria Revisited. Alternative Functions of Mitochondria

open access: yesBioscience Reports, 1997
This review explores the alternative functions of mitochondria inside the cell. In a general picture of mitochondrial functioning, the importance and uniqueness of these intrinsic functions make them irreplaceable by other intracellular compartments.

Possible role of human ribonuclease dicer in the regulation of R loops

open access: yesFEBS Open Bio, EarlyView.
R loops play an important role in regulating key cellular processes such as replication, transcription, centromere stabilization, or control of telomere length. However, the unscheduled accumulation of R loops can cause many diseases, including cancer, and neurodegenerative or inflammatory disorders. Interestingly, accumulating data indicate a possible

Downregulation of O‐GlcNAcylation enhances etoposide‐induced p53‐mediated apoptosis in HepG2 human liver cancer cells

open access: yesFEBS Open Bio, EarlyView.
Etoposide, a topoisomerase II inhibitor, reduces O‐GlcNAcylation in HepG2 liver cancer cells. Further inhibition of O‐GlcNAc transferase by OSMI‐1 enhanced etoposide‐induced apoptosis, lowering the IC50 for viability and increasing the EC50 for cytotoxicity.

Young Age and Concomitant Cannabis (THC) and Ethanol (EtOH) Exposure Enhances Rat Brain Damage Through Decreased Cerebral Mitochondrial Respiration

open access: yesMolecules
The reason why young people taking concomitantly cannabis (THC) and ethanol (EtOH) are more prone to stroke is underresearched. To investigate whether an underlying mechanism of increased brain damage could be an impaired mitochondrial function, this ...

Metabolic Modulation of Macrophage Function Post Myocardial Infarction

open access: yesFrontiers in Physiology, 2020
Macrophages are key components of innate immunity, and they play critical roles in heart health and diseases. Following acute myocardial infarction (MI), infiltrating macrophages undergo drastic phenotypic transition from pro-inflammatory in the early ...
