Utilizing small nutrient compounds as enhancers of exercise-induced mitochondrial biogenesis. [PDF]

open access: yes, 2015
Endurance exercise, when performed regularly as part of a training program, leads to increases in whole-body and skeletal muscle-specific oxidative capacity.

Spermidine alleviates cardiac aging by improving mitochondrial biogenesis and function

open access: yesAging, 2020
Polyamines have been shown to delay cellular and organismal aging and to provide cardiovascular protection in humans. Because age-related cardiovascular dysfunction is often accompanied by impaired mitochondrial biogenesis and function, we explored the ...

HSP70 governs permeability and mechanotransduction in primary human endothelial cells

open access: yesFEBS Open Bio, EarlyView.
HSP70 chemical inhibition reduces endothelial cell proliferation and increases permeability, the latter supported by normal interendothelial junctional protein distribution. HSP70 also plays a role in shear stress response, a hemodynamic force naturally present in blood vessels and correlated with vessel protection.

Glucocorticoid transiently upregulates mitochondrial biogenesis in the osteoblast

open access: yesChinese Journal of Physiology, 2020
Glucocorticoid (GC)-induced bone loss is the most prevalent form of secondary osteoporosis. Previous studies demonstrated that long-term incubation of dexamethasone (DEX) induced oxidative stress and mitochondrial dysfunctions, consequently leading to ...

FGF19 increases mitochondrial biogenesis and fusion in chondrocytes via the AMPKα-p38/MAPK pathway

open access: yesCell Communication and Signaling, 2023
Fibroblast growth factor 19 (FGF19) is recognized to play an essential role in cartilage development and physiology, and has emerged as a potential therapeutic target for skeletal metabolic diseases.

Metformin promotes mitochondrial integrity through AMPK‐signaling in Leber's hereditary optic neuropathy

open access: yesFEBS Open Bio, EarlyView.
Metformin mediates mitochondrial quality control in Leber's hereditary optic neuropathy (LHON) fibroblasts carrying mtDNA mutations. At therapeutic levels, metformin activates AMPK signaling to restore mitochondrial dynamics by promoting fusion and restraining fission, while preserving mitochondrial mass, enhancing autophagy/mitophagy and biogenesis ...

miR449a/SIRT1/PGC-1α Is Necessary for Mitochondrial Biogenesis Induced by T-2 Toxin

open access: yesFrontiers in Pharmacology, 2018
T-2 toxin is one of the type A trichothecenes produced mainly by the Fusarium genus. Due to its broad distribution and highly toxic nature, it is of great concern as a threat to human health and animal breeding.

Protein import into the endosymbiotic organelles of apicomplexan parasites [PDF]

open access: yes, 2018
The organelles of endosymbiotic origin, plastids, and mitochondria, evolved through the serial acquisition of endosymbionts by a host cell. These events were accompanied by gene transfer from the symbionts to the host, resulting in most of the organellar

MCU-induced mitochondrial calcium uptake promotes mitochondrial biogenesis and colorectal cancer growth

open access: yesSignal Transduction and Targeted Therapy, 2020
Mitochondrial calcium uniporter (MCU) has an important role in regulating mitochondrial calcium (Ca 2+ ) homeostasis. Dysregulation of mitochondrial Ca 2+ homeostasis has been implicated in various cancers.
