Mitochondrial DNA Repair Pathways
Journal of Bioenergetics and Biomembranes, 1999It has long been held that there is no DNA repair in mitochondria. Early observations suggested that the reason for the observed accumulation of DNA damage in mitochondrial DNA is that DNA lesions are not removed. This is in contrast to the very efficient repair that is seen in the nuclear DNA.

Mitochondrial Ca2+ uptake pathways
Journal of Bioenergetics and Biomembranes, 2016Calcium (Ca2+) plays diverse roles in all living organisms ranging from bacteria to humans. It is a structural element for bones, an essential mediator of excitation-contraction coupling, and a universal second messenger in the regulation of ion channel, enzyme and gene expression activities.

The Mitochondrial Death Pathway
2008Mitochondria have long been known to be critical for cell survival due to their role in energy metabolism. However, not until the mid-1990s did it become evident that mitochondria are also active participants in programmed cell death (PCD). This chapter focuses mainly on the role the mitochondria in mammalian cell death and cancer progression and ...

Mitochondrial pathways of neuronal necrosis
Biochemical Society Transactions, 2006We examined the mechanism of neuronal necrosis induced by hypoxia, excitotoxicity or non-excitotoxic hypoxia. Our observations showed that neuronal necrosis can be an active process starting with early mitochondrial swelling, followed by cytochrome c release and caspase cascade. Energy failure and/or calcium overloading of mitochondria may trigger this

The Triiodothyronine Mitochondrial Pathway
1999Numerous data show that mitochondrial activity is hormonally regulated. Besides the influence of α-agonists, glucagon and vasopressin, several studies show that glucocorticoid, thyroid hormone, vitamin D3 and peroxisome proliferators stimulate the activity of this organelle.

High-conductance pathways in mitochondrial membranes
Journal of Bioenergetics and Biomembranes, 1992The outer and inner membranes of mitochondria have recently been studied with the patch clamp technique. What has emerged is still an ill-defined picture for either membrane, primarily for the wide range of conductances found. Interestingly, however, a few conductances (in the range of 10-80 pS) seem to be ubiquitously distributed.

Mitochondrial Longevity Pathways
Science, 2007A cytosolic protein that translocates into the mitochondria may serve as an integration point for signaling pathways that control longevity and cell death.

Therapeutic targets in the mitochondrial apoptotic pathway
Expert Opinion on Therapeutic Targets, 2007Every cell in the human body has most of the components of the apoptotic apparatus and is thus principally equipped to die by apoptosis. Situations of increased or decreased apoptosis contribute to many forms of human disease, making this pathway an attractive target of therapeutic intervention.

Pathways to mitochondrial dysfunction in ALS pathogenesis
Biochemical and Biophysical Research Communications, 2017Alterations in the structure and functions of mitochondria are a typical trait of Amyotrophic Lateral Sclerosis, a neurodegenerative disease characterized by a prominent degeneration of upper and lower motor neurons. The known gene mutations that are responsible for a small fraction of ALS cases point to a complex interplay between different mechanisms
