Mechanisms of mitochondrial protein import

Essays in Biochemistry, 2000
Mitochondria import most of their proteins from the cytosol. Precursor forms of most matrix proteins as well as some IM and IMS proteins are synthesized on cytoplasmic ribosomes with N-terminal cleavable signal sequences. Many other mitochondrial proteins including IM carrier proteins contain internal targeting sequences.

Mitochondrial transport proteins of the brain

Journal of Neuroscience Research, 2007
Abstract In this study, cellular distribution and activity of glutamate and γ‐aminobutyric acid (GABA) transport as well as oxoglutarate transport across brain mitochondrial membranes were investigated.

Proteomic Analysis of Mitochondrial Proteins

2004
Publisher Summary The chapter discusses the proteomic analysis of mitochondrial proteins. Mitochondria play a central role in multiple cellular processes. In addition, mitochondrial dysfunction has been implicated in the cause of numerous diseases and disorders, including defects in energy metabolism, alzheimer's and parkinson's diseases, cancer ...

The Biology of Mitochondrial Uncoupling Proteins

Diabetes, 2004
Uncoupling proteins (UCPs) are mitochondrial transporters present in the inner membrane of mitochondria. They are found in all mammals and in plants. They belong to the family of anion mitochondrial carriers including adenine nucleotide transporters. The term “uncoupling protein” was originally used for UCP1, which is uniquely present in mitochondria ...

Supernumerary proteins of mitochondrial ribosomes

Biochimica et Biophysica Acta (BBA) - General Subjects, 2014
Messenger RNAs encoded by mitochondrial genomes are translated on mitochondrial ribosomes that have unique structure and protein composition compared to prokaryotic and cytoplasmic ribosomes. Mitochondrial ribosomes are a patchwork of core proteins that share homology with prokaryotic ribosomal proteins and new, supernumerary proteins that can be ...
