High throughput phenotyping method for water use efficiency in rice under field conditions : [Abstract, P 6.04] [PDF]

open access: yes, 2009
A collaborative CIAT/Cirad project aims to create new improved upland rice germplasm for drought tolerance based on population improvement through recurrent selection (RS).

A methionine‐lined active site governs carbocation stabilization and product specificity in a bacterial terpene synthase

open access: yesFEBS Letters, EarlyView.
This study reveals a unique active site enriched in methionine residues and demonstrates that these residues play a critical role by stabilizing carbocation intermediates through novel sulfur–cation interactions. Structure‐guided mutagenesis further revealed variants with significantly altered product profiles, enhancing pseudopterosin formation. These

Simulation of marker-assisted recurrent selection in autogamous species

open access: yesCrop Breeding and Applied Biotechnology, 2002
This work used computer simulation to evaluate marker-assisted selection (MAS) in recurrent selection of autogamous species. Base populations were simulated by crossing each of five inbred lines with two others.

A method for genotyping elite breeding stocks of leaf chicory (Cichorium intybus L.) by assaying mapped microsatellite marker loci [PDF]

open access: yes, 2015
BACKGROUND: Leaf chicory (Cichorium intybus subsp. intybus var. foliosum L.) is a diploid plant species (2n = 18) of the Asteraceae family. The term "chicory" specifies at least two types of cultivated plants: a leafy vegetable, which is highly ...

Valosin‐containing protein counteracts ATP‐driven dissolution of FUS condensates through its ATPase activity in vitro

open access: yesFEBS Letters, EarlyView.
Biomolecular condensates formed by fused in sarcoma (FUS) are dissolved by high ATP concentrations yet persist in cells. Using a reconstituted system, we demonstrate that valosin‐containing protein (VCP), an AAA+ ATPase, counteracts ATP‐driven dissolution of FUS condensates through its D2 ATPase activity.

MOLECULAR MARKERS: IMPLEMENTATION IN CROP PLANT BREEDING FOR IDENTIFICATION, INTROGRESSION, AND GENE PYRAMIDING

open access: yesВавиловский журнал генетики и селекции, 2014
Over the past decades, wide theoretical and practical experience has been obtained in application of DNA markers for investigation of plant genetic diversity, construction of molecular genetic maps, mapping of genes and quantitative trait loci, and ...

Molecular markers: their use in tree improvement

open access: yesJournal of Forest Science, 2012
Earlier breeders used phenotypic selection based on morphological characteristics to improve tree varieties. These selections often take many cycles of breeding and backcrossing in order to place desired characteristics. But today the knowledge has paved

Molecular markers for DNA-fingerprinting in cotton [PDF]

open access: yes, 2004
Molecular markers are long proposed as suitable for fingerprinting of crop species. With the development of the techniques the attention has shifted from protein to DNA-based markers as age-, tissue- and status-independent and, therefore, more reliable ...

Resistance to frost and tuber soft rot in near-pentaploid Solanum tuberosum - S. commersonii hybrids [PDF]

open access: yes, 2007
The objectives of the present study were to evaluate the tolerance to low temperatures and tuber soft rot in sexual near-pentaploid hybrids between incongruent 2x (1EBN) Solanum commersonii (CMM) and 4x (4EBN) S. tuberosum (TBR). For freezing resistance,
