Multiple pairs of allelic MLA immune receptor-powdery mildew AVRA effectors argue for a direct recognition mechanism

open access: yeseLife, 2019
Nucleotide-binding domain and leucine-rich repeat (NLR)-containing proteins in plants and animals mediate intracellular pathogen sensing. Plant NLRs typically detect strain-specific pathogen effectors and trigger immune responses often linked to ...

Tau acetylation at K331 has limited impact on tau pathology in vivo

open access: yesFEBS Letters, EarlyView.
We mapped tau post‐translational modifications in humanized MAPT knock‐in mice and in amyloid‐bearing double knock‐in mice. Acetylation within the repeat domain, particularly around K331, showed modest increases under amyloid pathology. To test functional relevance, we generated MAPTK331Q knock‐in mice.

Serotonin modulation of metabolism and stress response in Pseudomonas fluorescens

open access: yesBMC Biology
Background Pseudomonas fluorescens is a Gram-negative bacterium with a remarkable metabolic and physiological versatility that enables it to adapt and colonize diverse ecological niches, including the human small intestine.

Reconstitution of interferon regulatory factor 7 expression restores interferon beta induction in Huh7 cells

open access: yesJournal of Virology
Abundance of essential components of double-stranded RNA (dsRNA) recognition and the subsequent interferon (IFN) response vary widely between primary human hepatocytes (PHHs) and commonly used cell culture models based on derivatives of Huh7 cells ...

Sinorhizobium meliloti Controls Nitric Oxide–Mediated Post-Translational Modification of a Medicago truncatula Nodule Protein

open access: yesMolecular Plant-Microbe Interactions, 2015
Nitric oxide (NO) is involved in various plant-microbe interactions. In the symbiosis between soil bacterium Sinorhizobium meliloti and model legume Medicago truncatula, NO is required for an optimal establishment of the interaction but is also a signal ...

Calpain small subunit homodimerization is robust and calcium‐independent

open access: yesFEBS Letters, EarlyView.
Calpains dimerize via penta‐EF‐hand (PEF) domains. Using single‐molecule force spectroscopy, we measured the strength and kinetics of PEF–PEF homodimer binding. The interaction is robust, shows a transient conformational step before dissociation, and remains largely insensitive to Ca2+.

PII Protein-Derived FRET Sensors for Quantification and Live-Cell Imaging of 2-Oxoglutarate

open access: yesScientific Reports, 2017
The citric acid cycle intermediate 2-oxoglutarate (2-OG, a.k.a. alpha-ketoglutarate) links the carbon and nitrogen metabolic pathways and can provide information on the metabolic status of cells. In recent years, it has become exceedingly clear that 2-OG

Interactive molecular biology computing

open access: yesNucleic Acids Research, 1988
It is clear that the selection of the best possible algorithm for a computer program is essential for the creation of a useful tool. After this first step is taken, however, the usefulness of such a program may be greatly enhanced or impeded by the way it is implemented.

Structural insights into an engineered feruloyl esterase with improved MHET degrading properties

open access: yesFEBS Letters, EarlyView.
A feruloyl esterase was engineered to mimic key features of MHETase, enhancing the degradation of PET oligomers. Structural and computational analysis reveal how a point mutation stabilizes the active site and reshapes the binding cleft, expading substrate scope.

Salient Signature of van der Waals Interactions

open access: yes, 2017
van der Waals interactions govern the physics of a plethora of molecular structures. It is well known that the leading term in the distance-based London expansion of the van der Waals energy for atomic and molecular dimers decays as $1/R^6$, where $R$ is
