Structural instability impairs function of the UDP‐xylose synthase 1 Ile181Asn variant associated with short‐stature genetic syndrome in humans

open access: yesFEBS Letters, EarlyView.
The Ile181Asn variant of human UDP‐xylose synthase (hUXS1), associated with a short‐stature genetic syndrome, has previously been reported as inactive. Our findings demonstrate that Ile181Asn‐hUXS1 retains catalytic activity similar to the wild‐type but exhibits reduced stability, a looser oligomeric state, and an increased tendency to precipitate ...

Label-free neuroimaging in vivo using synchronous angular scanning microscopy with single-scattering accumulation algorithm

open access: yesNature Communications, 2019
A major challenge of in vivo imaging is imaging deeper, including in turbid tissue. The authors report an adaptive optics based microscope that uses coherent single scattering signal to reduce sample-induced aberrations and enable fast deep-tissue ...

Near-field transmission matrix microscopy for mapping high-order eigenmodes of subwavelength nanostructures

open access: yesNature Communications, 2020
Nanoscale integrated photonic devices have complicated combinations of optical eigenmodes. Here, the authors develop a far- to near-field transmission matrix microscopy that enables measuring higher-order modes of nanostructures beyond the capabilities ...

Structural biology of ferritin nanocages

open access: yesFEBS Letters, EarlyView.
Ferritin is a conserved iron‐storage protein that sequesters iron as a ferric mineral core within a nanocage, protecting cells from oxidative damage and maintaining iron homeostasis. This review discusses ferritin biology, structure, and function, and highlights recent cryo‐EM studies revealing mechanisms of ferritinophagy, cellular iron uptake, and ...

Quantum optical measurements with undetected photons through vacuum field indistinguishability

open access: yesScientific Reports, 2017
Quantum spectroscopy and imaging with undetected idler photons have been demonstrated by measuring one-photon interference between the corresponding entangled signal fields from two spontaneous parametric down conversion (SPDC) crystals.

Corrosion Inhibition Effect of 5-Azidomethyl-8-Hydroxyquinoline on AISI 321 Stainless Steel in Phosphoric Acid Solution

open access: yesInternational Journal of Electrochemical Science, 2021
In the present paper, 5-Azidomethyl-8-hydroxyquinoline (AMHQ), a synthesized molecule, has been evaluated as a corrosion inhibitor for AISI 321 stainless steel in 5.5 M phosphoric acid solution, using chemical and electrochemical methods such as ...

The planar cell polarity protein Vangl2 interacts with the PDZ‐domains of Scribble but not with a unique PDZ‐like domain in Inturned

open access: yesFEBS Letters, EarlyView.
Structural and biochemical characterisations show that the planar cell polarity (PCP) protein Inturned harbours a unique PDZ‐like domain that does not bind canonical PDZ‐binding motifs (PBMs) like that of another PCP protein Vangl2. In contrast, the apical‐basal polarity protein Scribble contains four PDZ domains that bind Vangl2, but one PDZ domain ...

Control of randomly scattered surface plasmon polaritons for multiple-input and multiple-output plasmonic switching devices

open access: yesNature Communications, 2017
Losses of bandwidth are inevitable when interfacing between optical and electronic components. Here the authors present a switching device consisting of a two-dimensional disordered array of nanoholes that can potentially transfer information about 40 ...

Tau acetylation at K331 has limited impact on tau pathology in vivo

open access: yesFEBS Letters, EarlyView.
We mapped tau post‐translational modifications in humanized MAPT knock‐in mice and in amyloid‐bearing double knock‐in mice. Acetylation within the repeat domain, particularly around K331, showed modest increases under amyloid pathology. To test functional relevance, we generated MAPTK331Q knock‐in mice.
