Hematopoietic (stem) cells—The elixir of life?

open access: yesFEBS Letters, EarlyView.
The aging of HSCs (hematopoietic stem cells) and the blood system leads to the decline of other organs. Rejuvenating aged HSCs improves the function of the blood system, slowing the aging of the heart, kidney, brain, and liver, and the occurrence of age‐related diseases.

Multi-cohort analysis and experimental study on the function of squalene epoxidase as a ferroptosis inhibitor in HCC

open access: yesBMC Cancer
Squalene epoxidase (SQLE) drives hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC) development via increased hepatic oxidative stress, a hallmark of ferroptosis. Although investigations have progressed, the precise link between SQLE and ferroptosis in HCC remains ...

scRNA-seq reveals ATPIF1 activity in control of T cell antitumor activity

open access: yesOncoImmunology, 2022
ATP synthase inhibitory factor 1 (ATPIF1) is a mitochondrial protein with an activity in inhibition of F1Fo-ATP synthase. ATPIF1 activity remains unknown in the control of immune activity of T cells.

Phosphatidylinositol 4‐kinase as a target of pathogens—friend or foe?

open access: yesFEBS Letters, EarlyView.
This graphical summary illustrates the roles of phosphatidylinositol 4‐kinases (PI4Ks). PI4Ks regulate key cellular processes and can be hijacked by pathogens, such as viruses, bacteria and parasites, to support their intracellular replication. Their dual role as essential host enzymes and pathogen cofactors makes them promising drug targets.

Long-read sequencing identifies ATXN3 repeat expansions, and transcriptomics reveals disease progression biomarkers and druggable targets for spinocerebellar ataxia type 3

open access: yesBMC Neurology
Background Hereditary ataxias (HAs) are neurodegenerative disorders characterized by progressive cerebellar degeneration, with autosomal dominant spinocerebellar ataxias (SCAs) representing the most prevalent subtype. SCA3, the most common form worldwide,

Novel Strategies to Optimize Targeted Molecular Imaging and Therapy [PDF]

open access: yes, 2013
Improving patients’ clinical outcomes requires many levels of examination, owing to the enormous complexities of human disease and healthcare delivery. Our understanding of disease also requires many different levels of observation.

Inhibition of Murine Cytomegalovirus Infection in Animals by RNase P-Associated External Guide Sequences. [PDF]

open access: yes, 2017
External guide sequence (EGS) RNAs are associated with ribonuclease P (RNase P), a tRNA processing enzyme, and represent promising agents for gene-targeting applications as they can direct RNase-P-mediated cleavage of a target mRNA.

The Caenorhabditis elegans DPF‐3 and human DPP4 have tripeptidyl peptidase activity

open access: yesFEBS Letters, EarlyView.
The dipeptidyl peptidase IV (DPPIV) family comprises serine proteases classically defined by their ability to remove dipeptides from the N‐termini of substrates, a feature that gave the family its name. Here, we report the discovery of a previously unrecognized tripeptidyl peptidase activity in DPPIV family members from two different species.

Phase I dose-escalation study of the mTOR inhibitor sirolimus and the HDAC inhibitor vorinostat in patients with advanced malignancy. [PDF]

open access: yes, 2016
Preclinical models suggest that histone deacetylase (HDAC) and mammalian target of rapamycin (mTOR) inhibitors have synergistic anticancer activity. We designed a phase I study to determine the safety, maximum tolerated dose (MTD), recommended phase II ...
