ALLERGY TO MONOSODIUM GLUTAMATE
Journal of the American Medical Association, 1954To the Editor: —I have observed allergy to monosodium glutamate in a mother and her son; two other siblings were not involved. The symptoms resembled those due to a gallbladder disease but may result from gastrointestinal reaction. They were manifested by epigastric fulness, eructations, distention, and upper abdominal discomfort that may become quite

Monosodium L-Glutamate Pentahydrate
Acta Crystallographica Section C Crystal Structure Communications, 1995The title compound, Na + .C 5 H 8 NO 4 - .5H 2 O, crystallizes with two independent chemical units, composed of two L-glutamate anions (Glu A and Glu B), two Na + ions and ten water molecules, per asymmetric unit. Each Na + ion is coordinated by six water molecules in an octahedral arrangement.

Histological effects of Monosodium glutamate (MSG) commonly used as food additive on the liver of adult Wistar rats were carefully studied. The rats of both sexes (n=24), average weight of 185g were randomly assigned into two treatments (n=16) and ...

Monosodium glutamate metabolism in the neonatal monkey
American Journal of Physiology-Legacy Content, 1975Monosodium glutamate (MSG) administered by gastric tube to 10 infant monkeys at doses of 1-4 g/kg produced rapid increases in plasma glutamate (17- to 33-fold) and aspartate (50- to 90-fold) levels. The degree of elevation was proportional to the dose administered. Levels of other amino acids were unaffected.

Abstract l -Monosodium glutamate ( l -MSG), dl -monosodium glutamate ( dl -MSG) and l -glutamic acid ( l -GA), each at dietary concentrations of 0.1 and 0.4%, were administered from 12 weeks of age to Sprague-Dawley rats for periods of up to 2 years and combined with a multigeneration reproduction test.

The toxicity of monosodium glutamate in young rats
Biochimica et Biophysica Acta (BBA) - General Subjects, 1971Abstract Intraperitoneal or intragastric injection of monosodium l -glutamate (4 mg/g) to infant rats invariably caused an increase in brain glutamine, never in brain glutamate. The toxicity (convulsions) observed after these doses was not unique to l -glutamate; monosodium l -aspartate or d -glutamate gave similar symptoms.

Pulmonary reactions to monosodium glutamate
Pediatric Allergy and Immunology, 1992Since the first report of bronchoconstriction provoked by ingestion of a meal containing monosodium glutamatc (MSG) in 1981, many studies have been performed to define the role of MSG in asthma. These studies have employed a variety of methodologies, and their results have led to different conclusions.

Monosodium glutamate kinetic studies in human volunteers
Toxicology Letters, 1980(a) A kinetic study of plasma glutamic acid (GA) was made after monosodium glutamate (MSG) administration to human volunteers. MSG was given at doses of 30,60 and 120 mg/kg in a bouillon and of 60 mg/kg in tomato juice. In another experiment a normal meal was consumed without added MSG.
