MUC1 is a large, heavily glycosylated mucin expressed on the apical surfaces of most simple, secretory epithelia including the mammary gland, gastrointestinal, respiratory, urinary and reproductive tracts. Although MUC1 was thought to be an epithelial-specific protein, it is now known to be expressed on a variety of hematopoietic cells as well.

The mean (+/- SEM) histologic score for MUC1 was 1.4 +/- 0.2 in the luminal epithelium of tubes with ectopic pregnancies, and the histologic score for normal tubes was 2.8 +/- 0.2;

Bortezomib resistance and MUC1 in myeloma

In this issue of Blood , Yin et al make the novel discovery that targeting the mucin 1 C-terminal subunit (MUC1-C) oncoprotein reverses resistance to the proteasome inhibitor bortezomib in multiple myeloma cells by triggering depletion of glutathione (GSH) pools and induction of oxidative injury.
