The expression pattern of MUC1 (EMA) is related to tumour characteristics and clinical outcome of invasive ductal breast carcinoma [PDF]
Aims: To clarify MUC1 patterns in invasive ductal breast carcinoma and to relate them to clinicopathological parameters, coexpression of other biological markers and prognosis.

Intestinal epithelial Notch-1 protects from colorectal mucinous adenocarcinoma [PDF]
Increasing evidence links Notch-1 signaling with the maintenance of intestinal architecture and homeostasis. Dysfunction in the common Notch-1 pathway transcription factor recombinant binding protein suppressor of hairless (RBP-J) is associated with loss of epithelial barrier integrity and aberrant conversion of proliferative crypt cells into goblet ...

Gut microbiome and aging—A dynamic interplay of microbes, metabolites, and the immune system
Age‐dependent shifts in microbial communities engender shifts in microbial metabolite profiles. These in turn drive shifts in barrier surface permeability of the gut and brain and induce immune activation. When paired with preexisting age‐related chronic inflammation this increases the risk of neuroinflammation and neurodegenerative diseases.

Common features between neoplastic and preneoplastic lesions of the biliary tract and the pancreas [PDF]
The bile duct system and pancreas show many similarities due to their anatomical proximity and common embryological origin. Consequently, preneoplastic and neoplastic lesions of the bile duct and pancreas share analogies in terms of molecular ...

Mucin 1 protects against severeStreptococcus pneumoniaeinfection [PDF]
Streptococcus pneumoniae is a bacterial pathogen that commonly resides in the human nasopharynx, typically without causing any disease. However, in some cases these bacteria migrate from the nasopharynx to other sites of the body such as the lungs and bloodstream causing pneumonia and sepsis, respectively.

Cotargeting TREM2 and IL2 pathways triggers multipronged anticancer immunity
Von Locquenghien et al. report that MiTE‐144, a triggering receptor expressed on myeloid cells 2 (TREM2) blocking antibody fused to interleukin‐2 (IL2) variant with tumour microenvironment restricted activation, demonstrates superior anticancer efficiency in a preclinical setting.

Transmembrane Mucin-1 Facilitates Oral Microbial Colonization in Oral Cancer
Mucins are a family of heavily glycosylated proteins that form the main organic component of the oral mucosal barrier complex. Transmembrane mucin 1 (tMUC1) is anchored at the superficial epithelial surface to provide a protective function.

A role for eosinophils in the intestinal immunity against infective Ascaris suum larvae [PDF]
The aim of this study was to explore the mechanisms of resistance against invading Ascaris suum larvae in pigs. Pigs received a low dose of 100 A. suum eggs daily for 14 weeks.

Mucin 1 Regulates Cox-2 Gene in Pancreatic Cancer [PDF]
Eighty percent of pancreatic ductal adenocarcinomas (PDAs) overexpress mucin 1 (MUC1), a transmembrane mucin glycoprotein. MUC1(high) PDA patients also express high levels of cyclooxygenase 2 (COX-2) and show poor prognosis. The cytoplasmic tail of MUC1 (MUC1-CT) partakes in oncogenic signaling, resulting in accelerated cancer progression.

This work identified serum proteins associated with pancreatic epithelial neoplasms (PanINs) and early‐stage PDAC. Proteomics screens assessed genetically engineered mice with abundant PanINs, KPC mice (Lox‐STOP‐Lox‐KrasG12D/+ Lox‐STOP‐Lox‐Trp53R172H/+ Pdx1‐Cre) before PDAC development and also early‐stage PDAC patients (n = 31), compared to benign ...
