Mucosal Melanomas of the Head and Neck
Otolaryngologic Clinics of North America, 1986Mucosal melanoma is a rare tumor in the head and neck region. The presence of a pigmented lesion in the mucous membranes should raise the suspicion of malignant melanoma. It may at times be difficult for the pathologist to arrive at the diagnosis of malignant melanoma.

Update on primary mucosal melanoma
Journal of the American Academy of Dermatology, 2014Mucosal melanomas are aggressive cancers of mucosal surfaces with clinical and pathologic characteristics distinct from cutaneous melanomas, warranting different staging systems and treatment approaches. Surgical resection is performed frequently for the primary tumor, although the utility of lymph node surgery and radiation therapy is not established.
