Cotton Farming Pesticides Affect Ileal Microbiota Activity and Expression of Virulome but Not Resistome or Metabolic Pathways in a Sedentary Wild Passerine

open access: yesEnvironmental Toxicology, EarlyView.
ABSTRACT The increased use of agrochemicals to enhance crop production has had detrimental environmental effects including implication in the sharp decline of North American farmland‐breeding birds. Here, using a combination of deep shotgun metatranscriptomics and pesticide exposure data, we sought to assess whether exposure to cotton (Gossypium spp ...

NMR, EM and functional studies on TBsmr, a small multidrug transporter from M. tuberculosis [PDF]

open access: yes, 2008
Antibiotic resistance of pathogenic bacteria is a major worldwide problem. Bacteria can resist antibiotics by active efflux due to multidrug efflux pumps.

Identification and molecular characterisation of CmeB, a Campylobacter jejuni multidrug efflux pump

open access: yes, 2002
A multidrug efflux pump gene (cmeB) was identified from the published Campylobacter jejuni genome sequence. Secondary structural analysis showed that the gene encoded a protein belonging to the resistance nodulation cell division (RND) family of efflux ...

Isolation of carbapenem‐resistant Pseudomonas aeruginosa and other Gram‐negative ESKAPE organisms from samples of raw‐meat diets for dogs in the UK

open access: yesVeterinary Record, EarlyView.
Abstract Background Gram‐negative ESKAPE organisms are an emerging threat in veterinary medicine that also have zoonotic potential. However, little is known about the prevalence and risks of these organisms in pet food. We present the incidental finding of gram‐negative ESKAPE organisms within samples of raw meat diets for dogs in the United Kingdom ...

Reviving Antibiotics: Efflux Pump Inhibitors That Interact with AcrA, a Membrane Fusion Protein of the AcrAB-TolC Multidrug Efflux Pump

open access: yes, 2016
Antibiotic resistance is a major threat to human welfare. Inhibitors of multidrug efflux pumps (EPIs) are promising alternative therapeutics that could revive activities of antibiotics and reduce bacterial virulence. Identification of new druggable sites

Nonthermal plasma approaches for combating implant‐associated infections: A compendious review

open access: yesVIEW, EarlyView.
Implant‐associated infections pose serious clinical challenges. Non‐thermal plasma (NTP) modifications overcome this bottleneck in distinct ways relative to traditional sterilization methods. Gas‐phase plasmas generate highly energetic species, UV radiation and reactive oxygen/nitrogen species (RONS), which alter the implant surface properties.

Spatial Patterns and Associated Factors of Intestinal Antibiotic Resistance Genes in Farmed Bullfrogs From Selected Farms Across Major Production Regions in China

open access: yesIntegrative Zoology, EarlyView.
Across selected bullfrog farms in major Chinese production regions, 106 intestinal ARG subtypes were detected, with tetracycline and sulfonamide resistance genes predominating and clear farm‐level variation. High‐risk ARGs, including ermB, floR, and qnrA, were associated with heavy metals, MGEs, and opportunistic pathogens. These findings highlight the

The role of cell wall organization and active efflux pump systems in multidrug resistance of bacteria

open access: yes, 2007
Multiple antibiotic resistance of clinically important bacteria are of major concern worldwide. Alterations of drug targets or enzymatic inactivation of antimicrobial agents are the well known mechanisms of antimicrobial drug resistance.
