A sandwich-like nanofibrous scaffold with macrophage phenotype transformation and myogenic differentiation for skeletal muscle regeneration

open access: yesBioactive Materials
Skeletal muscle injuries caused by trauma, infections, or sports tear are common clinical diseases. Currently, the regeneration and repair of muscle tissue, which is highly heterogeneous, remains a significant challenge.

Imaging of calcium transients in skeletal muscle fibers

open access: yesBiophysical Journal, 1991
Epifluorescence images of Ca2+ transients elicited by electrical stimulation of single skeletal muscle fibers were studied with fast imaging techniques that take advantage of the large fluorescence signals emitted at relatively long wavelengths by the dyes fluo-3 and rhod-2 in response to binding of Ca2+ ions, and of the suitable features of a ...

Targeting Post‐Irradiation Thyroid Dysfunction: Electrospun Scaffolds As A Dual‐Action Approach for Antioxidant and Immune Modulation

open access: yesAdvanced Healthcare Materials, EarlyView.
Radiation‐induced hypothyroidism follows head and neck radiotherapy due to oxidative stress and inflammation. Electrospun polycaprolactone scaffolds containing adenosine have potential to modulate thyroid repair. Scaffolds enhance thyrocyte proliferation, antioxidant enzymes glutathione peroxidase and catalase, reduce senescence and apoptosis markers ...

Nuclear receptors and skeletal muscle fiber type

open access: yesJournal of Physical Fitness and Sports Medicine, 2015
The contractile and metabolic properties of skeletal muscle depend on muscle fiber type composition. There are two major fiber types: type 1 fibers (slow-twitch oxidative) and type 2 fibers (fast-twitch glycolytic).

Design and Synthesis of Peptide‐Polyester Conjugates for Cell‐Mediated Scaffold Degradation

open access: yesAdvanced Healthcare Materials, EarlyView.
This work describes polycaprolactone (PCL)‐based biomaterials engineered to degrade in response to cell‐secreted proteases. A fast‐degrading peptide (Fast) sequence is integrated into a PCL conjugate backbone to produce a biomaterial that is selectively degraded by multiple cell types compared to its scrambled control (ScrFast).

Peroxisome proliferator-activated receptor-γ coactivator-1α in muscle links metabolism to inflammation [PDF]

open access: yes, 2009
1. In higher eukaryotes, metabolism and immunity are tightly coupled. However, whereas evolutionary, a compromised immune response due to undernourishment has been the predominant problem, the inflammatory response to obesity and other life style ...

Atomic Layer Deposition Processes: Versatile Platforms for Engineering ZnO‐Chitosan Biointerfaces

open access: yesAdvanced Healthcare Materials, EarlyView.
Vapour phase metalation (VPM), multiplied pulsed vapour phase infiltration (MPI), and O2 plasma‑enhanced atomic layer deposition (PEALD) tailor Zn–chitosan (Zn‑CS) films. PEALD improves wettability and biocompatibility. MPI enhances semiconductor behavior. Antiseptic selectivity: VPM → E. coli; MPI → H. pylori.

CONSTRUCTIVE TISSUE REMODELING BY EXTRACELLULAR MATRIX BIOSCAFFOLDS WITHIN THE AGING SKELETAL MUSCLE MICROENVIRONMENT [PDF]

open access: yes, 2013
Adult mammalian skeletal muscle tissue retains inherent regenerative capability in response to injury. This regenerative response is contingent upon an activated progenitor cell population and a temporal transition from pro-inflammatory M1 to ...

Advances in research on the prenatal development of skeletal muscle in animals in relation to the quality of muscle-based food. II -Genetic factors related to animal performance and advances in methodology [PDF]

open access: yes, 2011
Selective breeding is an effective tool to improve livestock. Several selection experiments have been conducted to study direct selection responses as well as correlated responses in traits of skeletal muscle growth and function. Moreover, comparisons of
