The effect of mutation rate variation.
The figure shows the effect on parameter estimation when the mutation rate is varied along the genome alignment. We split the alignment into segments geometrically distributed with mean length 500 bp and 2 kbp, and the mutation rate is then scaled by a ...

The Ile181Asn variant of human UDP‐xylose synthase (hUXS1), associated with a short‐stature genetic syndrome, has previously been reported as inactive. Our findings demonstrate that Ile181Asn‐hUXS1 retains catalytic activity similar to the wild‐type but exhibits reduced stability, a looser oligomeric state, and an increased tendency to precipitate ...

Higher Rates of Viral Evolution in Chronic Hepatitis B Patients Linked to Predicted T Cell Epitopes
The impact of hepatitis B virus (HBV) diversity and evolution on disease progression is not well-understood. This study aims to compare intra-individual viral evolution in two groups of chronic hepatitis B (CHB) patients, using antiviral treatment ...

The rates and biological significance of somatic mutations have long been a subject of debate. Somatic mutations in plants are expected to accumulate with vegetative growth and time, yet rates of somatic mutations are unknown for conifers, which can ...

We reconstituted Synechocystis glycogen synthesis in vitro from purified enzymes and showed that two GlgA isoenzymes produce glycogen with different architectures: GlgA1 yields denser, highly branched glycogen, whereas GlgA2 synthesizes longer, less‐branched chains.

The hierarchical island model revisited
Formulae were derived for the genetic differentiation between populations within a metapopulation (FSM), and between metapopulations (FMT) as functions of migration and mutation rates, size and number of populations and metapopulations. We show that FMT =

Tau acetylation at K331 has limited impact on tau pathology in vivo
We mapped tau post‐translational modifications in humanized MAPT knock‐in mice and in amyloid‐bearing double knock‐in mice. Acetylation within the repeat domain, particularly around K331, showed modest increases under amyloid pathology. To test functional relevance, we generated MAPTK331Q knock‐in mice.

Transposon insertion sequencing reveals novel hypermutator genes in Acinetobacter baumannii
Mutation rates in bacteria are an important determinant of adaptation to new environments and success in different niches. In some bacterial pathogens, “hypermutator” variants—most often associated with mutations in components of the DNA mismatch repair ...

Calpain small subunit homodimerization is robust and calcium‐independent
Calpains dimerize via penta‐EF‐hand (PEF) domains. Using single‐molecule force spectroscopy, we measured the strength and kinetics of PEF–PEF homodimer binding. The interaction is robust, shows a transient conformational step before dissociation, and remains largely insensitive to Ca2+.
