Six Groups of Double-Stranded RNA Mycoviruses

open access: yesIntervirology, 1984
Six groups of double-stranded (ds) RNA mycoviruses have been proposed. The main characteristics which define a group are described, and the properties of members and probable members of each group are tabulated. Possibilities for organization of the groups into families, genera and species are discussed.

Theobroma cacao Virome: Exploring Public RNA-Seq Data for Viral Discovery and Surveillance

open access: yesViruses
Cocoa (Theobroma cacao L.) is a major agricultural commodity, essential for the global chocolate industry and the livelihoods of millions of farmers. However, viral diseases pose a significant threat to cocoa production, with Badnavirus species causing ...

Diverse, Novel Mycoviruses From the Virome of a Hypovirulent Sclerotium rolfsii Strain

open access: yesFrontiers in Plant Science, 2018
Sclerotium rolfsii, which causes southern blight in a wide variety of crops, is a devastating plant pathogen worldwide. Mycoviruses that induce hypovirulence in phytopathogenic fungi are potential biological control resources against fungal plant ...

Diversity of RNA Viruses and Circular Viroid-like Elements in Heterobasidion spp. in Near-Natural Forests of Bosnia and Herzegovina

open access: yesViruses
Heterobasidion root rot fungi represent a major threat to conifer forest stands, and virocontrol (biocontrol) has been proposed as an alternative strategy of disease management in recent years.

Mycoviruses: A New Dimension in Microbiology

open access: yesEnvironmental Health Perspectives, 1972
Knowledge of mycoviruses is so new that most scientists are barely aware that they exist, yet they are widespread and affect many parameters. Their possible effect on the levels of toxins and metabolites produced by fungi enhance their significance in environmental health research. Evidence for the occurrence of a lysogenic virus in yeast was presented

Mycoviral Population Dynamics in Spanish Isolates of the Entomopathogenic Fungus Beauveria bassiana

open access: yesViruses, 2018
The use of mycoviruses to manipulate the virulence of entomopathogenic fungi employed as biocontrol agents may lead to the development of novel methods to control attacks by insect pests.

Mycoviruses, RNA Silencing, and Viral RNA Recombination [PDF]

open access: yes, 2011
In contrast to viruses of plants and animals, viruses of fungi, mycoviruses, uniformly lack an extracellular phase to their replication cycle. The persistent, intracellular nature of the mycovirus life cycle presents technical challenges to experimental design. However, these properties, coupled with the relative simplicity and evolutionary position of

Diversity and horizontal gene transfer of mycoviruses in Exserohilum turcicum population from northern corn leaf blight of maize

open access: yesPhytopathology Research
Northern corn leaf blight, caused by Exserohilum turcicum, severely affects maize yields globally. Some mycoviruses induce host hypovirulence in phytopathogenic fungi, offering the potential for fungal biocontrol.

Identification of Mycoviruses in the Pathogens of Fragrant Pear Valsa Canker from Xinjiang in China

open access: yesViruses
As a common disease, canker seriously affects the yield and quality of fragrant pear due to the lack of effective control measures. Some fungi have been reported to harbor rich reservoirs of viral resources, and some mycoviruses can be used as biocontrol
