Intracerebroventricular insulin injection acutely normalizes the augmented exercise pressor reflex in male rats with type 2 diabetes mellitus

open access: yesThe Journal of Physiology, EarlyView.
Abstract figure legend The exercise pressor reflex (EPR), evoked by muscle contraction, is exaggerated in male rats with type 2 diabetes mellitus (T2DM). Cerebrospinal fluid insulin and phosphoinositide 3‐kinase in the nucleus tractus solitarius levels are normal in controls and low in T2DM rats, corresponding with normal and exaggerated EPR function ...

The glia‐immune network: Astrocytes and oligodendrocytes as microglial co‐ordinators in health and disease

open access: yesThe Journal of Physiology, EarlyView.
Abstract figure legend The glia‐immune network involves the communication(s) of glia via immune signalling pathways. In neuro‐homeostasis these pathways have been shown to modulate key processes such as synaptic pruning and myelination. The dynamics of these processes is critical to CNS function.

MyelStones: the executive roles of myelin basic protein in myelin assembly and destabilization in multiple sclerosis.

Biochemical Journal, 2015
The classic isoforms of myelin basic protein (MBP, 14-21.5 kDa) are essential to formation of the multilamellar myelin sheath of the mammalian central nervous system (CNS).

Myelin breakdown and basic protein

Experimental Neurology, 1974
Abstract The purpose of the present work was to study the mechanisms of myelin breakdown in experimental conditions and the fate of protein components in myelin, especially that of myelin basic protein which is known to be important in demyelinative disorders. The results showed that when myelin was incubated alone without any added enzymes there was

Is myelin basic protein crystallizable?

Neurochemical Research, 1992
Myelin basic protein (MBP) is the predominant extrinsic protein in both central and peripheral nervous system myelins. It is thought to be involved in the stabilizing interactions between myelin membranes, and it may play an important role in demyelinating diseases such as multiple sclerosis.

Internal nanosecond dynamics in the intrinsically disordered myelin basic protein.

Journal of the American Chemical Society, 2014
Intrinsically disordered proteins lack a well-defined folded structure and contain a high degree of structural freedom and conformational flexibility, which is expected to enhance binding to their physiological targets.

Enzyme-linked immunoadsorbent assays for myelin basic protein and antibodies to myelin basic protein [PDF]

open access: possibleBiochemical Society Transactions, 1980
Abstract: Enzyme Linked Immunoadsorbent Assays are described for Myelin Basic Protein and antibodies to this protein. Under optimal conditions 30 pg of Basic Protein and 100 pg of antibody can be detected. Both assays are simple to establish, require small volumes of sample, and are highly reproducible.

In vitro carboxymethylation of myelin basic protein

Neuroscience Research, 1986
During a study to find natural substrate proteins of carboxymethylation, myelin basic protein was found to be a good substrate. The two protein carboxymethylases were purified partially using myelin basic protein as a substrate. These two enzymes may be identical with protein carboxymethylase I and II, which have been found to methylate gamma-globulin.

Autoimmunity to Myelin Basic Protein

1982
Experimental allergic encephalomyelitis (EAE) is an autoimmune central nervous system (CNS) disease which has been studied extensively, and has provided insight into mechanisms of immune tissue damage and immunologic self-tolerance. In addition, EAE serves as a prototype for human demyelinating diseases such as multiple sclerosis1.

Large scale preparation of myelin basic protein from central nervous tissue of several mammalian species.

Preparative Biochemistry, 1972
The wide-spread use of and demand for myelin basic protein for immunologic studies has prompted us to re-examine the details of its isolation from CNS tissue of various species.
