Vascular Functions of NADPH Oxidases [PDF]

open access: yesHypertension, 2010
NADPH oxidases belong to a group of enzymes that generate reactive oxygen species (ROS) by electron transfer from NADPH to molecular oxygen. The product of this reaction is the superoxide anion (O2−), which undergoes secondary reactions. O2− inactivates NO to yield peroxynitrite and spontaneously or under catalysis of superoxide dismutases reacts to ...

Crosstalk between HDAC6 and Nox2-based NADPH oxidase mediates HIV-1 Tat-induced pro-inflammatory responses in astrocytes

open access: yesRedox Biology, 2017
Histone deacetylase 6 (HDAC6) likely is important in inflammatory diseases. However, how HDAC6 exerts its effect on inflammatory processes remains unclear.

Downregulation of Blood-Brain Barrier Phenotype by Proinflammatory Cytokines Involves NADPH Oxidase-Dependent ROS Generation: Consequences for Interendothelial Adherens and Tight Junctions

open access: yesPLoS ONE, 2014
Background and Objectives Blood-brain barrier (BBB) dysfunction is an integral feature of neurological disorders and involves the action of multiple proinflammatory cytokines on the microvascular endothelial cells lining cerebral capillaries.

NADPH Oxidases in Cardiovascular Health and Disease [PDF]

open access: yesAntioxidants & Redox Signaling, 2006
Increased oxidative stress plays an important role in the pathophysiology of cardiovascular diseases such as hypertension, atherosclerosis, diabetes, cardiac hypertrophy, heart failure, and ischemia-reperfusion. Although several sources of reactive oxygen species (ROS) may be involved, a family of NADPH oxidases appears to be especially important for ...

Monitoring of the Membrane Potential in Proteoliposomes with Incorporated Cytochrome-c Oxidase Using the Fluorescent Dye Indocyanine [PDF]

open access: yesIvashchuk-Kienbaum Yu. A. J. Membrane Biol. 151, 247-259, 1996, 2002
A method has been developed to monitor changes of the membrane potential across vesicle membranes in real time. Using the potential-sensitive fluorescent dye indocyanine and on the basis of water/lipid redistribution model, a calculation procedure has been introduced to estimate the membrane potential in vesicles with incorporated cytochrome-c oxidase.

Deprenyl, an old drug with new anticancer potential: Mini review [PDF]

open access: yesarXiv, 2021
The anticancer potential of monoamine oxidase (MAO) was observed in pre-clinical assays conducted with cell cultures and animals. L-Deprenyl (DEP) causes apoptosis in melanoma, leukemia and mammary cells. High-dose DEP has shown toxicity in mammary and pituitary cancers, as well as in monoblastic leukemia, in rats.

Functional Effect of the p22phox -930A/G Polymorphism on p22phox Expression and NADPH Oxidase Activity in Hypertension [PDF]

open access: yes, 2004
Oxidative stress induced by superoxide is implicated in hypertension. NADPH oxidase is the main source of superoxide in phagocytic and vascular cells, and the p22phox subunit is involved in NADPH oxidase activation.

Vitamins Reverse Endothelial Dysfunction Through Regulation of eNOS and NAD(P)H Oxidase Activities [PDF]

open access: yes, 2003
Antioxidant vitamins C and E have protective properties in genetic hypertension associated with enhanced oxidative stress. This study investigated whether vitamins C and/or E modulate vascular function by regulating enzymatic activities of endothelial ...

Electron and proton transport by NADPH oxidases [PDF]

open access: yesPhilosophical Transactions of the Royal Society B: Biological Sciences, 2005
The NADPH oxidase is the main weapon of phagocytic white blood cells that are the first line of defence of our body against invading pathogens, and patients lacking a functional oxidase suffer from severe and recurrent infections. The oxidase is a multisubunit enzyme complex that transports electrons from cytoplasmic NADPH to molecular oxygen in order ...

Anatolian ground squirrel (Spermophilus xanthoprymnus) retina: Comparative expression of synaptophysin, NeuN, calbindin‐D28k, parvalbumin, glial fibrillary acidic protein, and Iba‐1 during pre‐hibernation and hibernation

open access: yesThe Anatomical Record, EarlyView.
Abstract Hibernation induces significant molecular and cellular adaptations in the retina to maintain function under reduced metabolic conditions. This study aimed to investigate the expression of neuronal, synaptic, and glial markers in the retina of Spermophilus xanthoprymnus during pre‐hibernation and hibernation periods using immunohistochemical ...
