Issues, challenges, directives, and limitations concerning the improvement of environmental risk assessment of pharmaceutically active compounds

open access: yesEcotoxicology and Environmental Safety, 2021
Nowadays, when tons of different chemicals including pharmaceutically active compounds (PhACs) are known to be released into the environment, applying adequate risk assessment relating to the protection of the ecosystem is very important. A broad body of

Phase Engineering of Atomically Precise Nanoclusters (APNCs) of Gold and Beyond

open access: yesAdvanced Materials, EarlyView.
Engineering the structural phase of materials is of paramount importance for both fundamental research and practical applications. In this Review, we summarize the recent progress in controlling the phases of atomically precise nanoclusters (APNCs) of gold, silver and copper, as well as bimetallic systems. The phase‐enabled material properties of APNCs

Mandatory nap times and group napping patterns in child care: An observational study

open access: yes, 2017
Policy provision for naps is typical in child care settings, but there is variability in the practices employed. One practice that might modify children’s early sleep patterns is the allocation of a mandatory nap time in which all children are required ...

Chromatin Packing Domain Engineering Through the Manipulation of Nuclear Cationic States

open access: yesAdvanced Science, EarlyView.
Manipulation of intranuclear divalent cation concentrations rapidly and reversibly remodels chromatin packing domains in living cells. Magnesium depletion disrupts domain compaction, heterochromatin organization, and transcriptional regulation, whereas magnesium loading promotes more compact and stable domains.

Benefits of napping in healthy adults: impact of nap length, time of day, age, and experience with napping [PDF]

open access: yesJournal of Sleep Research, 2009
SummaryNapping is a cross‐cultural phenomenon which occurs across the lifespan. People vary widely in the frequency with which they nap as well as the improvements in alertness and well‐being experienced. The systematic study of daytime napping is important to understand the benefits in alertness and performance that may be accrued from napping.

Canonical Antibodies Adopt Distinct Binding Modes to Recognize Viral Glycan Shields

open access: yesAdvanced Science, EarlyView.
Canonical Y‐shaped antibodies recognize viral glycan shields through adaptive Fab assembly states shaped by glycan organization and somatic hypermutation. Structural analyses ofbroadly neutralizing antibodies VRC35 and VRC36 across glycoproteins of HIV‐1, influenza, SARS‐CoV‐2, and Lassa viruses reveal distinct Fab assembly states, spanning monovalent,

Differential effects of DEAE negative mode chromatography and gel-filtration chromatography on the charge status of Helicobacter pylori neutrophil-activating protein. [PDF]

open access: yesPLoS ONE, 2017
Helicobacter pylori neutrophil-activating protein (HP-NAP) is involved in H. pylori-associated gastric inflammation. HP-NAP is also a vaccine candidate, a possible drug target, and a potential diagnostic marker for H.

α‐Synuclein Forms Distinct Micelle‐Like Assemblies at Low Ionic Strengths

open access: yesAdvanced Science, EarlyView.
At high ionic strength, α‐synuclein forms diverse assemblies, including oligomers, fibrils, and condensates. Here, we show that at low ionic strength, α‐synuclein adopts a distinct, low‐abundance assembly state. These assemblies maintain a constant size above a critical concentration and do not coalesce, suggesting a micelle‐like organization ...
