The identification of a small molecule compound that reduces HIV-1 Nef-mediated viral infectivity enhancement.

open access: yesPLoS ONE, 2011
Nef is a multifunctional HIV-1 protein that accelerates progression to AIDS, and enhances the infectivity of progeny viruses through a mechanism that is not yet understood.

HIV-1 Nef down-modulates C-C and C-X-C chemokine receptors via ubiquitin and ubiquitin-independent mechanism. [PDF]

open access: yesPLoS ONE, 2014
Human and Simian Immunodeficiency virus (HIV-1, HIV-2, and SIV) encode an accessory protein, Nef, which is a pathogenesis and virulence factor. Nef is a multivalent adapter that dysregulates the trafficking of many immune cell receptors, including ...

Association with PAK2 Enables Functional Interactions of Lentiviral Nef Proteins with the Exocyst Complex

open access: yesmBio, 2015
Human immunodeficiency virus type 1 (HIV-1) Nef enhances virus replication and contributes to immune evasion in vivo, but the underlying molecular mechanisms remain incompletely defined.

Nef HIV-1 (Retroviridae: Orthoretrovirinae: Lentivirus: Human immunodeficiency virus-1), multifunctional protein: features of genetic virus variants circulating in Russia

open access: yesВопросы вирусологии
Introduction. Nef provides high level of HIV-1 replication due to synergy of its multiple functions and is an important factor in the pathogenesis of HIV infection. Nef is considered as a target for development of therapeutic agents.

HIV-1 Myristoylated Nef Treatment of Murine Microglial Cells Activates Inducible Nitric Oxide Synthase, NO2 Production and Neurotoxic Activity. [PDF]

open access: yesPLoS ONE, 2015
The potential role of the human immunodeficiency virus-1 (HIV-1) accessory protein Nef in the pathogenesis of neuroAIDS is still poorly understood.

Promiscuous stimulation of HSP70 ATPase activity by parasite‐derived J‐domains

open access: yesFEBS Open Bio, EarlyView.
The malaria parasite Plasmodium falciparum exports three highly homologous yet functionally divergent J‐domain proteins into human erythrocytes. Here, we show that J‐domains isolated from all three proteins effectively stimulate the ATPase activity of both endogenous host and exported parasite HSP70 chaperones.

Tetherin/BST-2 antagonism by Nef depends on a direct physical interaction between Nef and tetherin, and on clathrin-mediated endocytosis. [PDF]

open access: yesPLoS Pathogens, 2013
Nef is the viral gene product employed by the majority of primate lentiviruses to overcome restriction by tetherin (BST-2 or CD317), an interferon-inducible transmembrane protein that inhibits the detachment of enveloped viruses from infected cells ...

Effectiveness of Multivitamins vs Folic Acid on Prevention of Neural Tube Defects in Mouse Genetic Models and Human Organoids

open access: yesAdvanced Science, EarlyView.
Folic acid (FA) and multivitamins/minerals (MVM) are recommended for the prevention of neural tube defects (NTDs). Using a novel human neural tube‐like organoid system and mouse models, the study compares the effectiveness of two supplements on NTDs and cellular behaviors.

SPARCL1 and NT‐proBNP as biomarkers of right ventricular‐to‐pulmonary artery uncoupling in pulmonary hypertension

open access: yesESC Heart Failure, Volume 12, Issue 2, Page 1416-1426, April 2025.
Abstract Aims SPARCL1 was recently identified as a biomarker of right ventricular (RV) maladaptation in patients with pulmonary hypertension (PH), and N‐terminal pro‐brain natriuretic protein (NT‐proBNP) is an established biomarker of RV failure in PH. The present study investigated whether NT‐proBNP and SPARCL1 concentrations are associated with load ...

Alkylating HIV-1 Nef - a potential way of HIV intervention

open access: yesAIDS Research and Therapy, 2010
Background Nef is a 27 KDa HIV-1 accessory protein. It downregulates CD4 from infected cell surface, a mechanism critical for efficient viral replication and pathogenicity.
