Noradrenergic receptor mechanisms in neophobia
Psychopharmacology, 1992We have previously demonstrated that depletion of forebrain norepinephrine (NE) led to an attenuation of neophobia in a novel environment, as defined by a greater preference for novel food over familiar food. To study further the role of forebrain NE in neophobia we chronically infused noradrenergic receptor ligands or forskolin into the lateral ...

Demonstrations of neophobia and enhanced neophobia in the albino rat.
Journal of Comparative and Physiological Psychology, 1975The conditions under which neophobia and enhanced neophobia occur in the albino rat were studied. Neophobia to a .1% saccharin solution was demonstrated in a 10-min single-bottle test. This neophobia was enhanced by pairing water ingestion with a radiation exposure of 100 r. or an injection of lithium chloride 24 hr prior to the saccharin test.

Dominance and neophobia in rats
Behavioral and Neural Biology, 1982Pairs of rats competed with one another for access to a drinking nozzle that delivered either water or a novel 3% vinegar solution. The members of each dyad that were dominant (i.e., most successful in controlling access to the drinking nozzle) when competing for water were less dominant (exhibited more neophobia) than their partners when competing for

Attenuation of saccharin neophobia by Melatonin
Pharmacology Biochemistry and Behavior, 1979Administration of Melatonin has been reported to decrease emotionality in the rat as indexed by the defecation response. The present experiment was designed to examine whether Melatonin would attenuate the neophobic response to a novel solution. It was found that Melatonin significantly increased the rat's consumption of a novel saccharin solution ...

Predator-induced neophobia in juvenile cichlids
Oecologia, 2015Predation is an important but often fluctuating selection factor for prey animals. Accordingly, individuals plastically adopt antipredator strategies in response to current predation risk. Recently, it was proposed that predation risk also plastically induces neophobia (an antipredator response towards novel cues).

Food Quality and Preference, 2016
Abstract A Wine Neophobia Scale (WNS) was created from The Food Neophobia Scale (FNS) modified by substituting the word ‘food’ with ‘wine’ and discarding one item. Respondents (n = 207) completed the WNS in order to identify scale items. Analysis indicated that the item “I am very particular about the wine I drink” should be removed.

Innovation in the food industry has assumed high importance as a tool to improve competitiveness and increase firms’ market shares. Over last years several new products have been developed where fats, vitamins, and some other ingredients have been added or removed, and new processing technologies have been implemented to increase sensory quality ...

Food neophobia shows heritable variation in humans
Physiology and Behavior, 2007Food neophobia refers to reluctance to eat unfamiliar foods. We determined the heritability of food neophobia in a family and a twin sample. The family sample consisted of 28 Finnish families (105 females, 50 males, aged 18-78 years, mean age 49 years) and the twin sample of 468 British female twin pairs (211 monozygous and 257 dizygous pairs, aged 17 ...

Food Neophobia in Childhood Affects Dietary Variety
Journal of the American Dietetic Association, 2000To determine whether children with food neophobia (unwillingness to try new foods) have more restrictive diets than children without neophobia.Seventy children were classified into 3 groups based on scores obtained on the Food Neophobia Scale: neophobic group, score greater than 41; neophilic group, score less than 27; and average group, score of 28 to

Prenatal psychological stress effects on taste neophobia
Physiology & Behavior, 1981Abstract Pregnant mothers were subjects to a novel environment, a treatment which is known to induce an 11-hydroxycorticosterone (stress) response, for 30 min daily for five successive days while control mothers were control handled. The novelty and control treatments were given to the pregnant mothers either during terms 1, 2 or 3 of pregnancy ...
