Piezo, Nephrocyte Function, and Slit Diaphragm Maintenance in Drosophila

Journal of the American Society of Nephrology
Visual Abstract Key Points Piezo channels, known for detecting mechanical pressure, were found to be expressed at the lacuna channel membranes of nephrocytes.

A Drug-Screening Platform for Podocytopathies in Drosophila Nephrocytes.

open access: yesJournal of the American Society of Nephrology
BACKGROUND The complex cellular architecture of the glomerular filtration barrier is not recapitulated in vitro, representing a major obstacle for drug screening.

The Drosophila nephrocyte

Current Opinion in Nephrology and Hypertension, 2011
The functioning kidney requires proper organization in multiple cell types that mediate filtration and removal of wastes. Interest has increasingly focused on the podocyte as an important mediator of kidney function; defects in podocyte function likely mediate a broad palate of kidney dysfunctions.

Using Drosophila nephrocytes in genetic kidney disease

Cell and Tissue Research, 2017
Renal diseases are a growing health burden, and innovative models to study their pathomechanisms are greatly needed. Here, we highlight how the fruit fly Drosophila melanogaster can be used to model kidney diseases. We focus on the nephrocyte that has recently been shown to exhibit podocyte and proximal tubular cell features.

Impact of cypermethrin in nephrocytes of freshwater fish Catla catla

Environmental Toxicology and Pharmacology, 2021
The kidney of Catla catla, chronically exposed to sub-lethal concentrations (0.24 μg/L and 0.41 μg/L) of cypermethrin revealed a significant elevation in the activity of antioxidants superoxide dismutase (SOD), catalase (CAT), glutathione-s-transferase (GST) and reduced glutathione (GSH) after 15 days, followed by a decline of up to 45 days.

Location, morphology and function of nephrocytes in termites

Arthropod Structure & Development, 2015
Insect nephrocytes are cells bathed in hemolymph and considered to have an excretory function. These cells have ambiguous nomenclature and are understudied in termites. This study is the first report on the occurrence, morphology and function of nephrocytes in different termite castes.

Nephrocytes of harvestmen, Leiobunum limbatum and L. rotundum

Tissue and Cell, 1991
Nephrocytes are said to be able to take up substances from the hemolymph. In Opiliones, which were examined electron microscopically three different types of nephrocytes were found. Numerous large nephrocytes lie clustered between the muscles in the anterior region of the body.
