Mathematical modeling reveals cell differentiation processes and progenitor kinetics necessary for proper nephrogenesis

open access: yesFrontiers in Cell and Developmental Biology
IntroductionThe developing zebrafish nephron contains a diverse repertoire of cell populations with intrinsically dynamic roles and interactions. Previous studies characterizing these populations have utilized genetic approaches based on powerful ...

Nephron‐Specific Disruption of Nitric Oxide Synthase 3 Causes Hypertension and Impaired Salt Excretion

open access: yesJournal of the American Heart Association: Cardiovascular and Cerebrovascular Disease, 2018
Background In vitro studies suggest that nephron nitric oxide synthase 3 (NOS3) modulates tubule Na+ transport. Methods and Results To assess nephron NOS3 relevance in vivo, knockout (KO) mice with doxycycline‐inducible nephron‐wide deletion of NOS3 were

Nephron-sparing management of upper tract urothelial carcinoma

open access: yes, 2021
Urothelial carcinoma of the upper urinary tract is uncommon and presents unique challenges for diagnosis and management. Nephroureterectomy has been the preferred management option, but it is associated with significant morbidity.

Renal‐vascular axis: unmasking its role in vascular endothelial growth factor‐inhibitor vascular toxicity in cancer patients

open access: yesBritish Journal of Pharmacology, EarlyView.
Abstract Vascular toxicity is a growing concern in cancer patients receiving vascular endothelial growth factor inhibitor (VEGFi) therapy, posing a significant threat to patient prognosis. While the primary mechanism of VEGFi‐induced vascular toxicity is linked to redox‐sensitive reactions that disrupt vascular tone, leading to hypertension and ...

marks nephron progenitor cells

open access: yes, 2021
Background: Nephron progenitor cells (NPCs) undergo a stepwise process to generate all mature nephron structures. Mesenchymal to epithelial transition (MET) is considered a multistep process of NPC differentiation to ensure progressive establishment of ...

Surface charge alterations in urinary extracellular vesicles mirror diabetic kidney disease pathophysiology

open access: yesThe FEBS Journal, EarlyView.
This study reveals that changes in the electrical charge, that is zeta potential of large extracellular vesicles (uEVs) found in urine, can reflect disease progression from diabetes to kidney scarring (fibrosis). With further clinical development, measurement of uEVs charge could provide a simple, noninvasive way to monitor disease progression and help

A mechanical pacemaker sets rhythmic nephron formation in the kidney

open access: yes
The mammalian kidney achieves massive parallelization of function by exponentially duplicating nephron-forming niches during development. Each niche caps a tip of the ureteric bud epithelium (the future urinary collecting duct tree) as it undergoes ...

Mortality in Salmon (Salmo salar) Fry Related to Lipoid Liver Disease Induced by Unbalanced Fatty Acid Composition of the Diet

open access: yesJournal of Fish Diseases, EarlyView.
ABSTRACT In 2023, all but one Swedish restocking farm rearing Baltic salmon and sea trout fry experienced massive mortality caused by lipoid liver disease (LLD). The struck farms used the same feed, and this was suspected to be the cause of the outbreak.

Quantitative analysis of intrarenal nerve‐associated profiles in the human foetal kidney between 14 and 30 gestational weeks: An S100 immunohistochemical study

open access: yesJournal of Anatomy, EarlyView.
S100 immunohistochemistry and digital morphometry were used to characterise nerve‐associated profiles in human foetal kidneys from 14 to 30 gestational weeks. Cortical S100‐positive area increased with gestational age and was positively associated with foetal weight and maturation zone thickness.
