Development of a novel model of optic neuritis to assess neuroprotective and repair strategies in multiple sclerosis

open access: yes, 2012
PhDMultiple sclerosis (MS) is a putative autoimmune disease of the central nervous system (CNS), which often affects the optic nerve pathway. Optic neuritis (ON) is a clinical feature of MS that can cause loss of vision due to conduction block and ...

Regenerative cell injection in denervated muscle reduces atrophy and enhances recovery following nerve repair

open access: yes, 2013
Introduction: Functional muscle recovery after peripheral nerve injury is far from optimal, partly due to atrophy of the muscle arising from prolonged denervation. We hypothesized that injecting regenerative cells into denervated muscle would reduce this

A causal examination of the correlation between hormonal and reproductive factors and low back pain

open access: yesFrontiers in Endocrinology
BackgroundThe relationship between hormonal fluctuations in the reproductive system and the occurrence of low back pain (LBP) has been widely observed. However, the causal impact of specific variables that may be indicative of hormonal and reproductive ...

Characterization of Defect Distribution in an Additively Manufactured AlSi10Mg as a Function of Processing Parameters and Correlations with Extreme Value Statistics

open access: yesAdvanced Engineering Materials, EarlyView.
Predicting extreme defects in additive manufacturing remains a key challenge limiting its structural reliability. This study proposes a statistical framework that integrates Extreme Value Theory with advanced process indicators to explore defect–process relationships and improve the estimation of critical defect sizes. The approach provides a basis for

Experimental Evaluation of 100Cr6 Steel Microindented Surfaces Under Lubricated Nonconformal Point Contacts

open access: yesAdvanced Engineering Materials, EarlyView.
The tribological behavior of 100Cr6 steel spheres textured via Vickers microindentation is evaluated under lubricated sliding by varying both dimple size and density. Fine and dense textures significantly reduce friction across all lubrication regimes, while large dimples increase it.

Utility of the superficial radial nerve as donor for grafting of ipsilateral forearm nerve defects (Letter)

open access: yes, 2019
Nerve trauma is an uncommon injury that can result in a marked deficit in upper extremity function (Lundborg and Rosen, 2007). Repair of a cut nerve requires tension-free approximation with microsurgical epiperineural sutures.

Low‐Cost, Large‐Scale Nanoporous Metals by Mechanical Alloying, Oxide Reduction, and Dealloying of Powders

open access: yesAdvanced Engineering Materials, EarlyView.
Powder metal processing provides scalable advantages in nanoporous (np) metal development. Mechanical alloying is used to produce unique precursors for hybrid nanopore formation by oxide reduction and dealloying. As demonstrated in np Ag, this approach improves process efficiency while promoting smaller ligaments and larger pores, both of which are ...

Skin derived precursors induced Schwann cells mediated tissue engineering-aided neuroregeneration across sciatic nerve defect

open access: yesBioactive Materials
A central question in neural tissue engineering is how the tissue-engineered nerve (TEN) translates detailed transcriptional signals associated with peripheral nerve regeneration into meaningful biological processes.

What Do Large Language Models Know About Materials?

open access: yesAdvanced Engineering Materials, EarlyView.
If large language models (LLMs) are to be used inside the material discovery and engineering process, they must be benchmarked for the accurateness of intrinsic material knowledge. The current work introduces 1) a reasoning process through the processing–structure–property–performance chain and 2) a tool for benchmarking knowledge of LLMs concerning ...
