Diastematomyelia: A Case with Familial Aggregation of Neural Tube Defects

open access: yesThe Scientific World Journal, 2004
Intrauterine neural tube defects, meningomyelocele, and diastematomyelia are developmental errors at different stages of the closure of the neural tube.

Novel mouse model of encephalocele: post-neurulation origin and relationship to open neural tube defects

open access: yesDisease Models & Mechanisms, 2019
Encephalocele is a clinically important birth defect that can lead to severe disability in childhood and beyond. The embryonic and early fetal pathogenesis of encephalocele is poorly understood and, although usually classified as a ‘neural tube defect ...

Lulu regulates Shroom-induced apical constriction during neural tube closure. [PDF]

open access: yesPLoS ONE, 2013
Apical constriction is an essential cell behavior during neural tube closure, but its underlying mechanisms are not fully understood. Lulu, or EPB4.1l5, is a FERM domain protein that has been implicated in apical constriction and actomyosin contractility

Engineered Nanotopography to Modulate Growth and Signaling of Neuronal Networks

open access: yesAdvanced Functional Materials, EarlyView.
This study examines the interaction between neurons and nanoscale topographies on engineered substrates. Neurons cultured on nanowires, nanopillars and nanoneedles exhibit enhanced neurite outgrowth, form more organized neuronal circuits, and display improved synaptic connectivity, compared to flat substrates.

Sonic hedgehog signaling directs patterned cell remodeling during cranial neural tube closure

open access: yeseLife, 2020
Neural tube closure defects are a major cause of infant mortality, with exencephaly accounting for nearly one-third of cases. However, the mechanisms of cranial neural tube closure are not well understood.

Multistage, Self‐Sensing Artificial Muscles With Coordination From Liquid Crystal Elastomer‐Graphene Composite Fibers

open access: yesAdvanced Functional Materials, EarlyView.
Inspired by skeletal muscles’ precision and endurance, CoilLCE integrates a self‐sensing liquid crystal elastomer/graphene artificial muscle with an embedded Joule‐heating copper coil, enabling closed‐loop multistage actuation with programmable intermediate states (strain accuracy of 2%), and antagonistic coordination (32% total strain). These features

Regulation of cell protrusions by small GTPases during fusion of the neural folds

open access: yeseLife, 2016
Epithelial fusion is a crucial process in embryonic development, and its failure underlies several clinically important birth defects. For example, failure of neural fold fusion during neurulation leads to open neural tube defects including spina bifida.

Association between rare variants in specific functional pathways and human neural tube defects multiple subphenotypes

open access: yesNeural Development, 2020
Background Neural tube defects (NTDs) are failure of neural tube closure, which includes multiple central nervous system phenotypes. More than 300 mouse mutant strains exhibits NTDs phenotypes and give us some clues to establish association between ...

Netrin-1 is required for efficient neural tube closure

open access: yes, 2013
During neural tube formation, neural plate cells migrate from the lateral aspects of the dorsal surface towards the midline. Elevation of the lateral regions of the neural plate produces the neural folds which then migrate to the midline where they fuse ...

Architecture‐Driven Functional Coupling in Vertically Aligned Nanocomposites

open access: yesAdvanced Functional Materials, EarlyView.
Vertically aligned nanocomposites define a growth‐engineered architecture in which vertical interfaces, strain fields, defect pathways, and phase connectivity are created simultaneously. This review shows how these architectural features couple ferroic, optical, ionic, electrochemical, and device responses, establishing design rules and open challenges
