Neuroglia in neurodegeneration
Brain Research Reviews, 2010Neuroglial cells are fundamental for control of brain homeostasis and they represent the intrinsic brain defence system. All forms in neuropathology therefore inevitably involve glia. The neurodegenerative diseases disrupt connectivity within brain circuits affecting neuronal-neuronal, neuronal-glial and glial-glial contacts.

Suicide is the worst outcome for many neuropsychiatric disorders having a high social and economic burden. There is a great need to determine the neurobiologic background of the etiopathogenesis and resilience toward suicide and to find novel pharmacologic strategies to treat suicidal behaviors.

Abstract This resource is the long-awaited new revision of the most highly regarded reference volume on glial cells, and has been completely revised, greatly enlarged, and enhanced with full color figures throughout. Neglected in research for years, it is now evident that the brain only functions in a concerted action of all the cells ...

Aging is associated with morphologic and functional decline of the brain active milieu and, in particular, of the neuroglia, which compromises homeostatic support and neuroprotection. Astrocytes in aging undergo complex and region specific changes, manifested by morphologic atrophy and widespread functional asthenia.

Nanostructured Modulators of Neuroglia
Current Pharmaceutical Design, 2019Biological and synthetic nanostructures can influence both glia and neurons in the central nervous system. Neurons represent only a small proportion (about 10%) of cells in the brain, whereas glial cells are the most abundant cell type. Non-targeted nanomedicines are mainly internalized by glia, in particular microglia, and to a lesser extent by ...

Imaging can help us understand the role neuroglia plays in health and during the course of neurologic disorders. In vivo microscopy has had a great impact on our understanding of how neuroglia behaves during health and disease. While initially the technique was hindered by the limited penetration depth in brain tissue, recent advancements lead to ...

Epilepsy is a group of neurologic diseases characterized by spontaneous, repetitive disruption to neuronal activity. Neurons have been at the core of epilepsy research efforts, and pharmacotherapies historically have been generated by targeting neuronal mechanisms.

Abstract We have emphasized that two special elements, which are really abstractions derived from many examples, form all neural tissue: the neuron with its various processes and the glial cell. The neuron has already been examined in detail, and we shall soon discuss its major process, the nerve fiber.

Leukodystrophies are a heterogeneous group of rare genetic neurologic disorders characterized by white matter degeneration resulting from mutations affecting glial cells. This review focuses on the primary subtypes-astroglial, oligodendroglial, and microglial leukodystrophies-offering a detailed description of their neuropathologic features and ...
